One migration virtual machine

Migration is the process of moving a virtual machine from one host or storage location to another. Copying a virtual machine means creating a new virtual machine, not in the form of migration

Cold migration

Cold migration is the migration of virtual machines that have been powered off or suspended; virtual machine disk files can be migrated to another host disk or to shared storage; you can use cold migration to move virtual machines from one data center to another

Migrate through vMotion (hot migration)

The prerequisite is that the migrated virtual machine data storage location must be shared storage (a storage server to which hosts can connect)

Move the powered-on virtual machine to the new host. With vMotion migration, you can move a virtual machine to a new host without disrupting virtual machine availability, but you cannot use vMotion to move a virtual machine from one data center to another; (change only the execution host, not the data storage location)

Migrate through Storage vMotion

Move the virtual disk or configuration file of the powered-on virtual machine to the new data store. With StoragevMotion migration, the storage of a virtual machine can be moved without interrupting the availability of the virtual machine (only the data storage location can be changed, not the execution host).

Migrate closed virtual machines

Environment: the virtual machine to be migrated is saved on the first host, and the virtual machine is migrated to the second host (full migration)

Steps:

1 right-click the virtual machine to be migrated (suspend status here = shutdown), select Migration, and select the third migration type

2 Select the target host or cluster for migration

3 Select target storage (you can select storage from other hosts or shared storage), click next, and click finish

4 waiting for completion. You can see the progress bar of the migration in the recent task.

Three heat transfer

Migrate a virtual machine that is powered on, either as an execution host or a disk file, but both cannot be hot migrated at the same time

Migration requirements: each host must be licensed correctly for vMotion (that is, to enable vMotion on the host where the virtual machine resides), each host must meet the shared storage requirements of vMotion, and each host must meet the network requirements of vMotion

1 vMotion shared memory requirement

The host to be vMotion is configured to use shared storage to ensure that both the source and target hosts can access the virtual machine.

"during migration through vMotion, the migrated virtual machine must be on storage accessible to both the source and destination hosts." Make sure that the hosts you want to vMotion are configured to use shared memory. Shared memory is usually located on the storage area network (SAN), but it can also be implemented using iSCSI and NAS shared memory (explained in the next chapter)

Migrating through vMotion requires that the network interfaces have been correctly configured on the source and destination hosts.

VMotion requires Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) to be set up between all vMotion-enabled hosts. Each vMotion-enabled host must have at least two Ethernet adapters, at least one of which must be a Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

A dedicated Gigabit Ethernet adapter is recommended for vMotion. Therefore, a citizen and a network card should be added to the host of ESXI5.0.

2 vCenter requirements

The source and destination ESXII hosts for vMotion migration must be in the same "data center" under the same vCenter, and VMotion cannot be migrated across "data centers". (virtual machines in the shutdown state can be migrated across "data centers", a process not called VMotion)

3 CPU requirements

For migrating virtual machines in the boot state, VMotion requires that the CPU models of the source and target ESXI hosts must be compatible. Of course, it is best to use the same model of CPU;. If the CPU model cannot be guaranteed to be exactly the same for various reasons, at least the same series of CPU or the same manufacturer's CPU (between Intel and AMD cannot be migrated online)

4 Network requirements

VMotion requires a dedicated VMkernel network to migrate virtual machines, so you need to configure a private network for VMotion on each ESXI host, and for performance reasons, it is best to bind a dedicated Nic to the VMotion network.

Note: the VMkernel network interface provides network connectivity for hosts and handles VMware vMotion, IP storage and Fault Tolerance

Moving virtual machines between hosts is called migration. With vMotion, you can migrate virtual machines that are powered on without downtime. The VMkernel network connection must be set up correctly to accommodate vMotion.

IP memory refers to any form of memory that uses TCP/IP network ESXi. Because these memory types are network-based, they can use the same VMkernel interface and port group

VMotion requires network bandwidth to be at least gigabit, so 100 megabit bandwidth is not allowed (hard limit)

VMotion requires that the source and destination hosts have the same network configuration, including the network type and network label.
