Chrome online App Store is Google's Chrome web browser extension and theme repository, which has had malicious expansion problems many times. The new Manifest V3 standard is designed to fix some of the excessive permissions granted to browser extensions by default, and now Google will begin to highlight reputable developers and publishers with special badges.

Established publisher badges will be automatically granted to developers and publishers who have verified and "establish a positive record consistent with Google services and comply with developer plan policies". In other words, most developers who don't violate Chrome's online app store rules may get badges at some point.

Google said publishers would not be able to pay for the two badges, but it was studying the way developers asked for consideration. Starting April 20, developers will be able to nominate their own extensions to receive featured badges.

The new badge is similar to Firefox's recommended extension, which includes extensions that "meet the highest standards of security, functionality, and user experience" after a comprehensive evaluation by Mozilla. Extensions in this program receive a "recommended" badge in the Firefox add-on repository, and developers cannot pay Mozilla to be included in the program.
