GDEM covers latitudes 83 degrees north to 83 degrees south (beyond the range of 56 °S to 60 °N covered by SRTM), making it the first earth mapping system to provide full coverage of the polar region. It was created by 1.3 million VNIR (visible and near infrared) images taken by ASTER, in which topographic elevation surveys are carried out around the world at intervals of 30 meters. Although the nominal resolution is high, some critics believe that the real resolution is much lower, is not as good as SRTM data, and there are serious artifacts. METI and NASA have identified some of these limitations, pointing out that the current version of the GDEM product is "research level".

Second edition

In October 2011, the second edition of GDEM was publicly released. Improvements include improved horizontal and vertical accuracy, better horizontal resolution, reduced artifacts, and more realistic water values. A 2014 study showed that on rugged mountain terrain, the ASTER version 2 dataset represents the ground more accurately than the SRTM elevation model.
