Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--
On November 13, 2018, enterprise Kubernetes management platform Rancher Labs, together with Huawei and the world's top container event KubeCon+CloudNativeCon, jointly organized the Service Mesh-themed Cloud Native Services Grid (Istio) Enterprise Summit. Technical leaders and micro-service architects from well-known companies such as Huawei, SAIC, Rancher Labs and Jinfeng Technology, as well as more than 500 viewers and tens of thousands of live viewers, shared their experiences and experiences in micro-service architecture construction and Service Mesh applications.
During the summit, Rancher Labs co-founder and CEO Liang Sheng, Huawei Cloud BU Container Services Domain Senior Product Manager, Zhao Shen, vice president of Yunhong, Gong Hanshen, general manager of Fanyi Business Development Department of SAIC Group, and Zhang Li, chief architect of Jin Feng Huineng, participated in the round-table discussion, focusing on industrial Internet and intelligent manufacturing in the Cloud 2.0 era. The following is a transcript of the Round Table Forum, some of which have been deleted and edited:
Host Rancher Liang Sheng
Huawei is a leading technology company both domestically and internationally, which is the pride of China. At the same time, Huawei is one of the first technology manufacturers I know to embrace container technology in China. In his speech just now, Fang Pu (Product Director of Huawei CloudBU Container Services Domain) mentioned that Huawei had identified more than a year ago that the next hot container technology would be Istio, which is Service Mesh. I would like to ask, what are Huawei's internal plans for container technology? With the further development of K8S, Istio and Service Mesh, what technologies do you think are more promising?
Huawei × ×
It is true that Huawei invested in K8S relatively early. In 2014, I began to participate in some open source work on containers on behalf of the company, and it was me and some colleagues who introduced this technology to the company in the first place. After switching to this product, we found that in the container market in China, K8S has been recognized by many enterprises, including our customers.
So, for the future development of container technology, from the perspective of the community and the market, we will divide the entire container stack into three dimensions:
First, the infrastructure layer, which means that there is an infrastructure layer at the bottom of the container, including K8S, Docker, etc.
Second, the application layer, this layer is more about solving our application problems, how to deploy quickly and improve the ability of intelligent governance, including Service Mesh and so on.
Third, the business layer, from Huawei's current contact with customers, the outermost layer needs to be closer to users to carry out industry innovation, to bring more in-depth value for customers.
From the perspective of the whole stack of the container in the future, it is gradually moving up, and different levels of technology are actually undergoing rapid iteration and evolution. In the morning, Fang Pu also mentioned that Service Mesh is not entirely aimed at micro-services, it exists to solve the application of enterprises, including how to carry out intelligent governance in the enterprise grid, including the ability of rapid distribution and update release, which is what every enterprise needs at this stage. I think this part of innovation will be in a very active state in the past two years.
However, the first two dimensions are only technical innovation, and the third dimension is customer-oriented innovation. In each area, corresponding container solutions need to be generated to solve the industry-specific problems through tools or platforms. this is the point that Huawei will continue to innovate with customers from last year to this year.

Thank you. Judging from the answer just now, Huawei will also make greater investment and further development, not only in technological innovation, but also in business-oriented innovation, from technical facilities to application-oriented services on the Istio platform. The next question I would like to ask Zhao Shen of Yunhong is that Yunhong's business model may be similar to VMWare. VMWare recently acquired a company in the container field called Heptio, but VMWare didn't do much container stuff before. I would like to ask Mr. Zhao, first of all, do you think containers will replace virtual machines? Second, is container technology, K8S technology and Service Mesh technology a threat or an opportunity for Cloud Macro?
Yunhong Zhao Shen
These two questions raised by Dr Leung are also two questions that we have been thinking about from the very beginning to the present.
When Yunhong develops to today, we will look back and find that whether it is the original virtualization or cloud platform, IaaS and containers are more of a combination. Do not rule out that containers may impact some markets, such as VMWare virtualization, but in essence, they solve different problems and focus on different levels. VM virtualization solves more resource problems, it will solve the problems of virtualization, resource utilization and scheduling. Our current container applications, customers are more concerned about how I should support the application? How to decouple the service? How should I make the transformation? How to choose a micro-service architecture?
After the final customer has gone through some construction paths, we find that it is the most profitable for the customer to choose the right framework in the right area. Only by packaging our customers' proven products as a whole and focusing more on business innovation, can we ultimately achieve our customers and ourselves. Therefore, we believe that these technologies are not a threat, they can help Yunhong find the right position to provide an overall solution for customers in a certain industry.
In the field of container technology, we have also done some exploration. Yunhong itself also has some software products, and we have carried out containerization transformation. Customers are more concerned about how to dismantle my service, and most of the time only customers know how to do some business things well. For the container, you choose this product or the solution, this is not the last step, the most critical application business includes the split of services, only these things are most familiar to the customer, what we need to do is to let the customer release the time and energy to focus on this area.
Host Rancher Liang Sheng
Thank you. I think from VMWare's recent increase in investment in K8S, we can see that they must feel that the container will be a great opportunity for them. The theme of today's round table forum is related to intelligent manufacturing, because SAIC and Jinfeng belong to the leading manufacturing enterprises, so I would like to ask General Gong and Zhang Li, from your point of view, what challenges have the IT of the manufacturing industry faced? What is the opportunity for you to touch the container and consider the container?
SAIC Fan Yi Shang Xing Gong Hanshen
Hello, everyone. I am Gong Hanshen from SAIC. Fan Yi Shangxing is a SAIC wholly-owned service platform company. I assume the role of Party B in my own enterprise.
At present, from my point of view, there are many needs for enterprise transformation, which is mainly related to the development direction of the enterprise. The three intelligent directions formulated by SAIC include intelligent travel, intelligent manufacturing and intelligent driving, which are hot topics in the automobile industry.
Based on these three points, it can incubate a lot of specific business directions, such as the AI platform I just introduced in my speech, and the trip released in recent days, and these businesses have different requirements for technology or business, and they often require greater output in a short period of time. But as a service side, when we do not have an in-depth understanding of the business, we hope to understand it and provide technical support for it in the short term is a very difficult thing. In a sense, we also hope to have some common and common technologies that can help these businesses transform the Internet faster.
We used OpenStack before, and from a cloud platform point of view, we can provide them with relevant resources. However, from the strategic point of view of the group, we should not only assume such a simple role. Public cloud manufacturers such as Tencent and Ali all have industry capabilities, and similarly, we also want to abstract our capabilities into the capabilities of the automotive industry. so we want to integrate into the business, to abstract some common business technology functions or some general technical functions Can a framework like Istio introduced by Huawei just now be integrated into our business framework and become a new framework? As a cloud platform service provider, we hope to standardize some things and standardize some products for users to use as far as possible. This is my understanding of manufacturing IT and container technology.
Host Rancher Liang Sheng
Okay, thank you. Next, let's see what Zhang Li of Jin Feng has in mind.
Jin Feng Huineng Zhang Li
Generally speaking, the business on my side is a business with relatively high production pressure, not Internet-based business, nor those deployed in the cloud. Basically, they are all privately deployed by customers, such as provincial data centers or power plant data centers. These data centers have a history of about ten years and are very perfect or very stable, but when customers need to add some new requirements. It will be troublesome to modify these software.
Some businesses want to put data on the cloud and become a centralized management system, and then its challenge arises. How should it be changed? How much pressure will there be on the production business after the change? Once it has updated the system, how can hundreds or thousands of private deployments on site be upgraded? And these data centers are in the quarantine zone, it is difficult to upgrade.
Secondly, the operation and maintenance personnel are older operation and maintenance personnel, they simply do not understand Docker, let alone K8S, Istio and other technologies, these technologies are quite complicated to manage, and what they can understand is that you run a stand-alone version of a single application. I made an update earlier and found that more than 50 service modules were about to collapse, and the operation and maintenance staff could not maintain them at all, which posed a great challenge to them.
In view of the environment of the manufacturing industry, the whole architecture is optimized into a micro-service distributed system, how to upgrade management in the production environment, this is a very challenging thing.
