Let Xiaobian lead you to study and learn about how to download an operating system image with GNOME Boxes in linux.

Boxes is a virtual machine application on GNOME. Boxes recently added a new feature that makes it easier to run different Linux distributions. You can now automatically install those distributions in Boxes, as well as operating systems like FreeBSD and FreeDOS, and even Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The Red Hat Developer Program includes a free subscription to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Using a Red Hat developer account, Boxes can automatically set up an RHEL virtual machine called a Developer Suite subscription. Here's how it works.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux

To create a virtual machine for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, launch Boxes and click New. Select Download a Mirror from the Source Selection list. At the top, click Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This will open a Web form at developers.redhat.com Sign in with an existing Red Hat developer account or create a new one.

If this is a new account, Boxes needs some additional information before proceeding. This step requires opening a developer subscription in your account. Also make sure you accept the terms and conditions, which saves you a step in the registration process later on.

Click Submit and the installation disk image will start downloading. How long it takes to download depends on your network. In the meantime, you can go for a cup of tea or coffee.

When the media download is complete (usually located at ~/Downloads), Boxes will have a "Quick Install" display. Fill in your account and password and click "continue." When you have confirmed the virtual machine information, click "create." Quick Install automatically completes the entire installation! Now you can enjoy your second cup of tea or coffee.

When the installation is complete, the virtual machine will restart and log in to the desktop. In the virtual machine, start Red Hat Subscription Management in the System Tools section of the Applications menu. This step requires entering the root password.

Click the Register button and follow the steps in the Registration Assistant. When prompted, sign in with your Red Hat developer account.

You can now download and update via any update method, such as yum or GNOME Software.

FreeDOS or something else.

Boxes can install many operating systems, not just Red Hat Enterprise. As a front-end to KVM and qemu, Boxes supports a variety of operating systems. Using libosinfo, Boxes can automatically download (and in some cases install) quite a few different operating systems.

To install an operating system from the list, simply select and complete the creation of a new virtual machine. Some operating systems, such as FreeDOS, do not support quick installation. These operating systems require virtual machines to boot from installation media. Then you can install it manually.

Popular operating systems on Boxes

Here are just a few of the more popular options currently on it.

Fedora regularly updates its operating system information database (osinfo-db). Make sure you check frequently for new operating system options.
