Unix Study--Upgrade and rollback of AIX patches

Patching, especially upgrading TL, is risky. Therefore, we suggest that risk assessment should be done when upgrading TL and patching in production system to ensure that problems can be reversed after upgrading. AIX OS does this well.

Install AIX patch pack

1. Go to fix central (http://www-933.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/) and download AIX patches as needed

2. Upload patches to servers that need updating

3. Run the command "smitty installp"→"Update Installed Software to Latest Level (Update All)" in the system, and directly enter the path of the patch package in the "INPUT device / directory for software" item, as shown in Figure 1.

4. It is best to simulate the installation preview before installing, and select the option "PREVIEW only?" (install operation will NOT occur)"to"Yes"(select with"ESC"+"4"), then Enter

5. View the output. If the output result is OK, press "ESC"+"3" to return to the previous interface in Figure 1. The option "PREVIEW ONLY?" (install operation will NOT occur)"changed to"No","COMMIT software updates? "SAVE REPLACED FILES?" "Yes","ACCEPT new license agreements? "Change to"Yes"and enter

6. See the screen output OK, the patch is installed.

Rolling Back Fix Pack for AIX Installation

Fallback can only be applied during patch installation by setting the option "COMMIT software updates? "Set to"No"and"SAVE replaced files?" "Set to"Yes"for patches installed. Otherwise, you can only delete, but not reverse.

1. Run the command "smitty install"→"Software Maintenance and Utilities"→"Reject Applied Software Updates (Use Previous Version)" in the system

2. Press "ESC"+"4" in "SOFTWARE name" to display the selection menu, select the patch that needs to be rolled back by pressing "ESC"+"7" and enter

3. Before you go back, you should simulate a preview first, and select the option "Preview only". (install operation will NOT occur)"to"Yes"(select with"ESC"+"4"), then Enter

4. View the output. If the output result is OK, press "ESC"+"3" to return to the interface shown in Figure 2. The option "PREVIEW ONLY?" (install operation will NOT occur)"to"No"and enter

5. See the screen output OK, the patch is back.

6. After rollback, press ESC +0 to return to the command line interface. Enter the command "lslpp -l| grep XXXX"(XXXX is the fallback patch filesets) to see if filesets roll back to previous versions.
