As a result, the open with dialog box appears in the browser's window. Microsoft explained in the new document: "this creates an awkward experience because only the first registered application is' native'to the user, and the subsequent application loses that originality by registering protocol processing management on all Windows surfaces."

Microsoft is now exploring a new way to register additional applications and operating systems so that each installed PWA has its own registry association at the registry level. To facilitate this new behavior, Microsoft will completely separate browser protocol registration from application protocol registration on Windows.

Microsoft said: "this will allow multiple applications to register on Windows to handle the same protocol." as you can see in the screenshot of the "Open With" dialog above, Microsoft's new approach to network application protocol handlers will also support multiple profiles.

"in terms of user experience, this provides customers with a more streamlined experience because applications are now handled entirely on the operating system side and can be ambiguous against browsers, other Win32 applications, other Web applications and themselves, if installed in multiple configuration files," Microsoft said.

The above dialog box will be visible when you install multiple applications for the same URL protocol. For example, if you open and click on a protocol "web+music://songid", this will allow you to choose a web app or desktop app to play the song.
