The Kubernetes1.14 version was officially released on March 26th, just 112 days after the v1.13 release, which was the first release of kubernetes in 2019. The content of this release includes: Windows node production support, kubectl update, persistent local volume GA.

Let's take a look at how the v1.14 release team describes this release:

"We are pleased to announce the release of Kubernetes 1.14, our first release in 2019! Kubernetes 1.14 contains 31 enhancements: 10 stable features, 12 beta testing features, and 7 new features. The main contents of this release are: scalability and support for more workloads on Kubernetes, with three major features migrated to the general version, and an important security feature entering the testing phase."

New enhancements to Windows nodes

So far, the Windows node support in Kubernetes is in the testing stage, and many users have experimented and viewed the performance of the Windows container. Kubernetes now officially supports the addition of Windows nodes as working nodes and orchestration of Windows containers, enabling the vast ecosystem of Windows applications to take advantage of the power of Kubernetes. This improves the efficiency of the entire deployment, no matter what operating system you are using.

Specific Windows and kubectl enhancements include:

1. Support for Windows nodes tends to stabilize (# 116)

Support for worker nodes and containers can use Windows Server 2019.

Support with Azure-CNI, OVN-Kubernetes, Flannel networks.

Improved support for pod, service types, workload controllers, metrics / quotas.

two。 The updated kubectl plug-in mechanism is gradually stabilizing (# 579)

Extend kubectl to support the addition of new commands and override specific subcommands.

3. Persistent local storage management has been GA (# 121)

Make locally attached (non-network attached) storage available as a persistent volume source.

Allows users to use local storage.

4. Process ID (PID) is being upgraded to beta version (# 757)

Prevent pod from running out of pid resources.

Administrators can provide pod-to-pod PID isolation by defaulting to the number of PID per Pod.

5.Pod priority and preemption mechanism

The Pod priority and preemption mechanism Kubernetes scheduler can schedule the more important Pod first, and when the cluster has no resources, it deletes the less important Pod to create space for the more important Pod. Importance is specified by priority.

Two known problems

1. There is a known problem with coredns/coredns#2629 in coredns 1.3.1. If Kubernetes API shuts down while connecting to CoreDNS, CoreDNS will crash. This issue fixes CoreDNS/CoreDNS#2529 in CoreDNS 1.4.0.

If the existing pvc installed on flexvolume contains a large number of directories or the directories are full, Kubelet may not be able to restart # 75019. The future direction of Kubernetes

Kubernetes has supported the Linux operating system since its inception, but in version 1.14, production support for Windows nodes is now marked as stable. With Windows node support, you can use Kubernetes to plan and manage Windows operating system containers.

Aaron Crickenberger (Google Senior Test engineer and leader of the release team) said that Windows support will help to better clarify what Kubernetes is in different operating systems and different runtime environments. In his view, if you really want to be able to orchestrate workloads on a hybrid operating system cluster, that would be a very good result.

In the future, Crickenberger expects to extract more scalable components from the Kubernetes core, including storage, CSI, DNI, and container networks, as well as more cloud provider work.

BoCloud Boyun has always been deeply involved in the development of the Kubernetes community to ensure a deep understanding of the underlying kubernetes. The BeyondContainer container PaaS platform is equipped with a professional underlying development and maintenance team to ensure control and service capabilities of Kubernetes and Docker in terms of ability and manpower. In the future, Boyun will continue to follow the trends of kubernetes technology, and will release and verify more user usage scenarios based on the new features of kubernetes, so as to provide stable, secure and reliable PaaS services for enterprise users.
