MySQL's purchase of InnoDB is defeated by Oracle announces the opening of data engine [@ more@] 08:32 on April 28, 2006 eNet Silicon Valley Power

[eNet Silicon Valley Power News] according to foreign media reports, after Oracle acquired Innobase, one of the data engines used by MySQL, the next step of MySQL has attracted the attention of the industry. On Wednesday, MySQL finally made an important announcement, opening up its database interface to allow customers to choose different data storage engines. In addition, Oracle's aggressiveness prompted MySQL to develop its own data storage engine, which brought MySQL into a new world.

MySQL CEO Maarten Meeks made the announcement Wednesday at the annual user conference in Santa Clara, California. At present, MySQL does not have its own data storage engine (responsible for the physical storage and indexing of data). The industry believes that MySQL's move to open up the data engine will bring more flexibility to customers.

Next, MySQL will launch the certification of the data storage engine, which will allow industry partners, open source development communities and even customers to develop their own data storage engines.

Currently, the three storage engines available to MySQL customers are Falcon, developed by MySQL, and those developed by partners Solid and InnoDB. InnoDB maintained a partnership with MySQL after it was acquired by Oracle. In an interview with Red Herring on Wednesday, Meeks also revealed that MySQL had planned to buy InnoDB, but without success.

Meeks said that InnoDB is the preferred storage engine for MySQL users, and that buying the company would be extremely beneficial to the development of MySQL. However, after the failed bid, MySQL decided to develop its own storage engine after reflection. Earlier this year, MySQL acquired a related company and began work on a data engine codenamed "Falcon".

"We have been in contact with InnoDB," Meeks said. "when the news of Oracle's acquisition of InnoDB came, we were all shocked. Although this is not good news for MySQL, it proved to be positive for us. We are satisfied with the current Falcon engine, and we have a product that will become very powerful in the future."

At present, MySQL is the undisputed "boss" in open source databases. After the upgrade of version 5.0, MySQL databases become more and more like large databases such as SQL Server, and gradually expand from the open source circle to the enterprise market. With the advantage of low cost, the market for MySQL is expanding. In 2005, MySQL has made a profit and sales revenue has exceeded 40 million US dollars.
