The virtual switch vSwitch, provided by the ESXI kernel, is a virtual switch used to connect different virtual machines and management interfaces. A vSwitch can consist of one or more vmnic, and different vSwitch cannot use the same vmnic. The first virtual switch vSwitch0 is installed by default, which is used for console, virtual machine online and other functions. All network operations of ESXI are based on the relationship between port/port group and vmnic,vSwitch.

The essential difference between standard virtual switch and distributed virtual switch lies in the scope of its application. A standard virtual switch can only be applied to one physical host without any flexibility, and other hosts cannot share a virtual switch. Distributed virtual switch (vDS) can be shared among hosts and can be used as virtual devices between hosts. It can achieve the function of a single virtual switch-connecting hosts and virtual machines (VM).
There are many similarities between standard virtual switches and distributed virtual switches. Distributed virtual switches provide network connectivity to virtual machines and VMkernel interfaces that manage traffic between hosts. Distributed virtual switches also require physical network cards to connect to external physical networks.
The distributed virtual switch is more flexible than the standard virtual switch, all the hosts in the cluster can use the distributed virtual switch, and the distributed virtual switch can add hosts to the cluster relatively easily.
An important premise that a distributed virtual switch is different from a standard virtual switch configuration is that all vSphere hosts must be in a cluster managed by vCenter Server. You also need to consider which physical switch port to use to build a distributed virtual machine switch. A conventional virtual switch has only one physical switch port connected to the network port of the physical host; however, the physical switch port of the distributed virtual switch is also distributed. This ensures that VMware distributed virtual switches can access the same physical network infrastructure independently of the VMware vSphere hosts used.
VNetwork distributed virtual switch must be a super switch defined by vCenter at the data center level across multiple ESXI hosts (only supported by the Enterprise Plus version). It logically forms a "large" switch with a single switch distributed on multiple ESX hosts; originally, each ESX standard switch was configured separately, but now vCenter Distributed vSwitch can be centrally configured and managed at the data center level. VNetwork distributed virtual switch provides a centralized control point for cluster-level network connections, so that the network configuration in the virtual environment is no longer based on hosts.
