Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--

This article mainly introduces the meaning of DN, CN, DC and OU in LDAP. It has a certain reference value, and interested friends can refer to it. I hope you can learn a lot after reading this article.

The English name of DN is (distinguished name), which translates directly into the proper name.

The simple one can be understood as a path.

This path can point to either OU or CN.

Where DN has three attributes, which are CN,OU,DC.

DC (Domain Component)

CN (Common Name)

OU (Organizational Unit)

O (Organization Name)

O is optional and sometimes you may not be able to see it.

Here is a list of attributes for X.500:

String X.500 AttributeTypeCN commonNameL localityNameST stateOrProvinceNameO organizationNameOU organizationalUnitNameC countryNameSTREET streetAddressDC domainComponentUID userid

It can be understood that DC is the highest, called domain name, and basically all ldap services have at least one DC.

At the next level of DC, there will be an OU,OU that can be understood as an organizational unit, and we can have multiple organizational units. You can organize user groups in organizational units, you can organize users in organizational units, and you can organize organizational units in organizational units.

Under OU is CN, and it can be understood that CN is a concrete example, such as a specific user.

So to locate an instance, the path is CN-OU-DC

You may have multiple OU, multiple DC, but will eventually locate to the highest level of DC

When this long string is put together, it is DN.

Organization sequence

The organization is in reverse order.

For example, the following DN:

CN=cwikius,ou=Users,dc=jumpcloud,dc=com

The actual search order is

DC=COM

DC=jumpcloud

OU=Users

CN=cwikius

The path at the highest level is at the end, if understood as the lookup path for the file system:

COM/jumpcloud/Users/cwikius

The final CN=cwikius can be understood as a specific file, but the file does not have a suffix.

A structure similar to the one pictured above.
