Samsung released its next internal processor, the Exynos 980, in IFA in 2019. With 5G modems integrated directly into CPU, this seems to be a big step forward without a separate modem to support next-generation networks.

This is a small change, but an important one: much like Qualcomm, it promises to add 5G modems to its next Snapdragon flagship product, and Samsung will also provide 5G support for phones and tablets that use Exynos chips in the future. This also means that Samsung can save internal space by not needing additional modem chips, which should also help to make the 5G more energy efficient.

The new Exynos 980s are manufactured in 8nm process and support 5G to 2G networks. Samsung promises to have the gigabit speed of the LTE, and the 5G speed below the 6GHz can reach up to 2.55Gbps, which is particularly omitted in the announcement? It supports the millimeter wave network, which operates at higher wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum and serves as the basis for Verizon's current 5G network.

The overall performance of the new eight-core chip is also said to be better, with special attention to the on-board neural processing unit (NPU) for artificial intelligence tasks, which Samsung says is 2.7 times faster than before. The chip also supports cameras up to 108 million pixels and up to five independent sensors.

However, the history of the past can be said to be useless. Don't expect to see the Exynos 980s on any US phone anytime soon. Samsung tends to keep international variants of its internal chips for its devices and insists on using Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors and modems in the US. But since production of the Exynos 980 will begin by the end of this year, it is likely to appear in phones such as the Galaxy S11.

Given that this year's S10 lineup has a separate and expensive 5G version, next year's Samsung flagship may have default support between Qualcomm and Samsung's promise to integrate 5G. This is more interesting than the speed at which Samsung is accelerating here.
