Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

Today, I will talk to you about how to use a snapshot on the ECS console to create a brand new cloud disk. Many people may not know much about it. In order to make you understand better, the editor has summarized the following for you. I hope you can get something from this article.

Create a cloud disk with snapshots

You can use the snapshot of the cloud disk (whether system disk or data disk) to create a cloud disk separately through the console or API interface. The created cloud disk can be mounted to any ECS instance under the same availability zone in the same region. This article describes how to create a completely new cloud disk using a snapshot on the ECS console.

Application scenario

You may need to get some data from the snapshot, but you don't want to do it by rolling back the cloud disk. At this point, you can use the snapshot to create a new cloud disk and read data from the cloud disk. For example, if the system disk fails to boot, you can use the existing snapshot of the system disk to create a new cloud disk and mount it to a healthy instance to read the data in the snapshot of the system disk.

Performance description

Once the new efficient cloud disks and SSD cloud disks are successfully created, they can achieve the highest performance corresponding to their capacity without the need for preheating. However, because snapshots are stored in object storage (OSS), when creating a cloud disk using snapshots, ECS needs to retrieve data from OSS and write to the cloud disk. This process takes a period of time and results in performance degradation on the first access. It is recommended that you read all the data blocks on the cloud disk before using this type of cloud disk, so as to avoid initial performance degradation. For more information about OSS, see what is object Storage OSS.

Matters needing attention

Before creating a cloud disk, you need to know the following information:

Cloud disks created in this way can only be billed by postpaid and can only be used as data disks.

Description

You can also create cloud disks using snapshots of system disks or data disks when creating ECS instances. The billing method of cloud disk created in this way is the same as that of the instance.

You can create a completely new empty cloud disk. For more information, please see creating a cloud disk.

The limit of postpaid cloud disks created by each account for data disks in all regions = the number of postpaid instances of the account in all regions * 5. For more information, see usage restrictions.

Currently, ECS does not support merging multiple cloud disks. After the cloud disk is created, each cloud disk is an individual, and multiple cloud disk spaces cannot be merged together by formatting. It is recommended that you plan the number and capacity of cloud disks in advance.

For multiple cloud disks that have been created, it is not recommended to create logical volumes such as LVM (Logical Volume Manager). Because snapshots can only be created for each cloud disk independently, data differences will occur when using snapshots to roll back cloud disks after using LVM.

After creation, you can change the billing method of cloud disk:

If the cloud disk is mounted on a prepaid instance, convert the postpaid cloud disk to a prepaid cloud disk by upgrading the configuration of the prepaid instance.

If the cloud disk is mounted on a postpaid instance, the postpaid cloud disk will be converted to a prepaid cloud disk by changing postpaid to prepaid.

For the cloud disk created in this way, you can uninstall the cloud disk and release it at any time as long as the billing method is not changed.

prerequisite

Before creating a cloud disk using snapshots, you must confirm the following information:

You have created a snapshot of the cloud disk used as a system disk or data disk, and confirm the snapshot ID. For more information, see create a snapshot.

Your account balance must not be less than 100 yuan or equivalent vouchers or coupons. This is because the separately created cloud disks are billed by quantity.

The region and availability zone where the instance of the cloud disk needs to be mounted. When mounting a cloud disk, the instance and the cloud disk must be in the same region and availability zone.

Operation steps

Log in to the ECS Management console.

In the left navigation bar, click Storage > Cloud disk.

In the upper right corner of the disk list page, click create Cloud disk to enter the creation page.

Select the region and availability zone.

Description

When mounting a cloud disk, the instance and the cloud disk must be in the same region and availability zone.

Set the configuration of the cloud disk:

Select cloud disk type: the optional cloud disk type is not affected by the source cloud disk type corresponding to the snapshot.

Click create disk with Snapshot and select a Snapshot.

Description

If the selected snapshot is an encrypted disk snapshot, the encrypted entry is automatically selected. Otherwise, you cannot select encryption. For disk encryption, see ECS disk encryption.

Set the capacity of the cloud disk: the optional range is 20 GiB~32768 GiB. If the selected snapshot is less than 20 GiB, the system uses a minimum capacity of 20 GiB by default, and you can manually adjust the capacity according to your needs. "if the selected snapshot is greater than 20 GiB, the system automatically sets the size of the cloud disk based on the snapshot size, but you must manually set the capacity after you replace the snapshot."

Set the amount of purchase.

Confirm the current configuration and configuration costs.

Click Buy now and follow the page guide to complete the creation.

After the creation is successful, go back to the disk list page and refresh the list. You can see the newly created cloud disk, and the disk status is displayed as to be mounted.

Subsequent operation

Mount the cloud disk
