In general, when a website or application updates its design, it should provide a better experience for users. But sometimes these updates can have a negative impact. This is what happened on Twitter after the design change was launched on Weibo's website and mobile app a few days ago.

Twitter proudly announced these changes on August 11. "Today, we have made some changes to the look and feel of Twitter on the web and on mobile phones. Strange as it may seem at first, these updates make us easier to access, more unique, and focus on what you and you are talking about," the platform announced.

With this new design, the contrast of buttons and links becomes higher. Twitter also released its new font, Chirp, and announced some improvements to make the text more visible. In addition, Twitter removes some elements that may distract users.

Contrast problem

But soon, criticism broke out from all directions. Some users even reported that the new design gave them a headache. TechCrunch quoted design expert Alex Haagaard as saying: "immediately after the release of the update, I felt a pain in my eyes and I had a tension headache in about half an hour. I have a lot of chronic pain and I can't deliberately expose myself to things that aggravate my pain because it has a chain reaction."

Finally, on August 13, the change was made. "We are changing the contrast of all the buttons to make it easier for them to see the eyes, because you tell us that the new look is uncomfortable for sensitive people. We listen and iterate," read Twitter posts.

In addition, Twitter reports that it has observed display errors and errors related to new fonts on Windows.

"[...] people with disabilities have been consulted throughout the process from the very beginning. However, people have different preferences and needs, and we will continue to focus on feedback and improve the experience. We are aware that we may get more feedback in the future, and we will strive to do that," the Weibo platform acknowledged in a statement forwarded by TechCrunch.
