This article will explain in detail how to use Magisk to unlock Bootloader and RootGoogle Pixel 3. The content of the article is of high quality, so the editor shares it with you for reference. I hope you will have a certain understanding of the relevant knowledge after reading this article.
Preface
Like the Google Nexus series, if you want to root Google Pixel a smartphone or install a custom ROM for it, you must first unlock the Bootloader. The latest Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL launched this year are no exception. In fact, with the update of the root artifact Magisk, root Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have long been possible. Currently, the latest version of Magisk is 17.3. For more information, please see the update instructions here. It takes only a few seconds to unlock the Pixel 3 series Bootloader with Magisk, and it takes only a few minutes to get your device up and running Magisk. If you have any experience of unlocking Google Nexus,Google Pixel or OnePlus devices, unlocking Pixel 3 and installing Magisk should not confuse you.
Unlock Google Pixel 3 Bootloader
Note: unlocking bootloader will erase all data in the device, including all media stored in the device's internal memory, such as pictures, videos, music, documents, etc. To avoid unnecessary hassles and losses, be sure to back up all important files to PC or cloud storage before doing so.
1. Open the phone settings-about the phone-click the version number 7 times to open the "developer options".
two。 Go back to the settings and open the developer option-turn on USB debugging and open "OEM unlock". For security reasons, this may require you to enter the lock screen PIN/ password.
3. Scroll down until you see the USB Debug option and enable it.
4. Insert Pixel 3 into PC and follow the steps here to set up ADB and Fastboot on PC. If you can only access Chromebook, please refer to this guide to set up ADB and Fastboot on Chrome OS.
5. Make sure your PC recognizes your Pixel 3 phone properly by opening the command prompt / Power Shell/Terminal in the same directory where the ADB and Fastboot binaries are saved, and typing the following command according to your current operating system:
Windows command prompt:
Adb devices
Windows Power Shell:
.\ adb devices
MacOS/Linux Terminal:
. / adb devices
(note: for the rest of this tutorial, the use of commands also depends on your operating system. )
If you see the serial number of the device and display "authorized", you can continue with the following. If this is the first time you have set up ADB for this device, you may see the prompt "enable USB debugging for your PC" on your phone. Just click grant. If you have problems using Windows PC to identify devices, try installing the latest Google USB Drivers.
6. Now, restart to the bootloader menu. You can do this by holding down the power and volume down keys at startup or by entering the following ADB command:
Adb reboot bootloader
7. After entering the bootloader menu, you must now switch to using the fastboot command to communicate with your device. To unlock the bootloader for Pixel 3, enter the following command:
Fastboot flashing unlock
8. Now you should see a warning text on the screen telling you about the huge potential risks of unlocking bootloader. You should see some prompts on the screen next to the power and volume buttons. Press the volume up button until "unlock the bootloader" appears, and then press the power button.'
9. At this point, the phone will unlock the bootloader and restart to the bootloader menu. This time, bootloader will display a red warning icon with the word "unlocked".
10. Now, restart the phone and return to Android 9 Pie OS. You can do this by sending the following fastboot command:
Fastboot reboot
11. At this point, we have successfully unlocked the bootloader of Google Pixel 3 or Google Pixel 3 XL! You will see a warning that your phone's bootloader has been unlocked every time you restart, but don't worry that it won't affect your daily use.
Second, use Magisk Root Google Pixel 3
Note: the following instructions were written prior to the release of a custom recovery, such as TWRP. Therefore, the only way to install Magisk is to swipe into patched boot image from bootloader. Therefore, the inventory boot image I provided will become obsolete when the updated boot image is available for the next version of the software. Once TWRP is available, I will update these directives, so the directives are independent of the version number.
With the unlocked bootloader, you can now start the modified boot image. For Magisk to work, you need boot image for patched Pixel 3. Fortunately, Magisk Manager app can solve this problem for you. I have tested on my own Google Pixel 3 XL and Dees_Troy 's Google Pixel 3 to confirm that Magisk can run on both devices.
1. Since the device has been erased, you need to go back and re-enable the developer option and USB debugging. Please make sure your PC still recognizes your Pixel 3 phone.
two。 Download stock boot image for Google Pixel 3 or Google Pixel 3 XL. Note: make sure that the version number of your device matches the boot image. You can view it by opening the phone settings-about the phone-and clicking on the version number.
Download Google Pixel 3 ("blueline") stock boot image version number PD1A.180720.030
Download Google Pixel 3 XL ("crosshatch") stock boot image version number PD1A.180720.030
3. Move the stock boot image to a folder in the device's internal memory. Download the folder.
4. Install the latest Magisk Manager beta APK. If the following patched boot image does not start, try downloading the latest Magisk Manager APK by joining Magisk Canary channel.
5. Click install.
6. Click install again and the displayed zip file will not be installed.
7. Click "Patch Boot Image File".
8. Select the previously saved stock boot image file.
9. At this point, you should see the progress of "Magisk Manager patching the stock boot image" on the screen. When you are finished, click close. Magisk Manager should have saved the file as "patched_boot.img" to the Download directory.
10. Move the patched_boot.img file from your device to your PC. To avoid trouble, move the files to the same directory as the ADB and Fastboot binaries.
11. Restart to the bootloader menu again.
12. (optional) in bootloader, enter the following fastboot command to temporarily boot patched Magisk boot image:
Fastboot boot patched_boot.img
13. After a few seconds, your phone should exit the bootloader menu and restart to Android Pie OS. If successful, you should be able to open Magisk Manager and see which version of Magisk is installed. Now we need to actually install Magisk so that we don't have to run the fastboot command before each startup.
14. Let's brush patched Magisk boot image into the boot partition. Enter the following command in the bootloader interface:
Fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
15. (optional) because the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL support the An inactive slot B partition, you can also brush the patched boot image into the inactive slot (inactive slot). Simply replace "boot" with "boot_a" or "boot_b" in the above command.
16. Reboot back to Android Pie OS and check the status of root by opening Magisk Manager.
What can we do after Root Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL?
Here are some of the things I think I can do:
1. Install Active Edge Mod to completely customize the squash gesture on Pixel 3. (note: support for Pixel 3 has not been updated yet, but developers are working on it! )
2. Install custom themes for system applications or third-party applications through the Substratum theme engine. Similarly, you can also use applications such as Pluvius to set the system theme according to the current wallpaper dynamics.
3. Use Titanium Backup to make a complete application backup.
4. Re-enable call recording (the Android Pie call recording feature will not be available to non-root users).
5. Do you miss Android Nougat's blob emoji? Now you can use the Blobmoji Magisk module to retrieve these emoticons.
6. There are a large number of audio mods in Magisk Module repo, which allows you to experience better music playback!
7. Like stock Gboard keyboard app? Look at these Gboard themes.
Are you a big fan of Google apps and services? With root, you can enable many features in development that haven't been officially released yet. You can check out our article, and there are a large number of examples in our tutorial articles.
9. Not a fan of Google Pixel Launcher? Then, you can choose to use a third-party launcher like Lawnchair, which you can integrate into recent application profiles and gesture navigation.
10, customize the default system media, fonts, start animation, etc.
11. The YouTube Vanced- is suitable for the enhanced version of Android YouTube application.
12. This is an app we developed that allows you to customize the display saturation level if you like more intense colors.
You may have heard that unlocking bootloader and root devices will prevent you from playing some games, such as Pok é mon Go and Fate/Grand Order, or even using some bank app programs properly. But you can rest assured that MagiskHide can help you hide traces of device modifications, allowing you to use apps and play games like normal users. In addition, unlocking bootloader will affect your access to updates. You need to know how to update sideload security patches every month, which is also very easy.
Finally, if you want more control over your device, you can brush in the custom ROM and kernel on Pixel 3. Custom ROM can provide you with many options that are not available in inventory software. The custom kernel allows you to adjust the performance of your device to increase battery life or increase the number of frames in your favorite game. Since Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have just been released, there is currently no custom ROM or kernel available for this device.
