Why create and delete merged snapshots?

When building a test environment, in order to reduce the unknown errors caused by the construction, I usually take a snapshot of the phased completion step by step, and then delete the snapshots one by one from back to front to merge them into the virtual hard disk. The more snapshots created by the same virtual machine, the slower the running efficiency of the virtual machine. Deleting the merged snapshot can significantly improve the running efficiency of the virtual machine.

Problem description

Deleting a merged snapshot requires more free disk space than the size of the deleted snapshot. If there is not enough space, an error will be reported when deleting. When you have enough space, you will find that the snapshot can no longer be seen in the snapshot manager. Although the virtual machine is running normally, it cannot continue to delete and merge snapshots.

Solution idea

At present, there is no better way, and there are two workarounds available: capture virtual machine and clone virtual machine. Both methods can achieve the effect that the new virtual machine is exactly the same as the original virtual machine, and the new virtual machine automatically deletes and merges snapshots to the virtual hard disk.

The preparation work of capturing virtual machines is tedious, and the operation of cloning is easier, so I will use cloning to solve the problem. If you have a better way, please leave a message or email me, thank you.

Operation steps

In the snapshot manager of the virtual machine, try to delete the merged snapshot because there is not enough space to see it. Check the virtual machine storage directory. These snapshots are all there, and the virtual machine is running normally:

Open the snapshot manager of the virtual machine, and click Clone directly:

Clone the current status of the virtual machine on demand:

Clone scenario is selected to create a full clone:

Enter the clone virtual machine name in the virtual machine name, and select the clone virtual machine save location at the location:

After the clone is completed, open the directory where the clone virtual machine resides, and you can see that the snapshot has been deleted and merged to the virtual machine hard disk:

Turn off the cloned virtual machine, then open it in VMware Workstation and select a new virtual machine to work as well as the original virtual machine.
