9 enable fault tolerance for virtual machines
In this section, you will enable the FT (fault tolerance) feature of the virtual machine that was installed and configured in the previous section. Before enabling fault tolerance, modify the configuration of the virtual machine to 2 CPU (2 slots, 1 kernel per slot) and 512MB memory. Then enable fault tolerance for the virtual machine, the main steps are as follows.
(1) Select the virtual machine for which you want to enable FT, right-click and select "Fault Tolerance → Open Fault Tolerance" in the pop-up dialog box, as shown in figure 9-1.

(2) because we do this test in a virtual machine, when we open FT, there will be a fault message that "the virtual network card associated with the host is not broadband enough to be used for FT logging", as shown in figure 9-2. In fact, this hint does not affect later testing.

(3) in the Select data Store dialog box, select a data store for the secondary virtual machine. In the new version of FT, the primary and secondary virtual machines can be placed in different data stores, which further improves the security of "fault tolerance", as shown in figure 9-3. Select another shared storage here for the secondary virtual machine.

(4) in the Select Host dialog box, select a host for the secondary virtual machine, as shown in figure 9-4. Secondary virtual machines and hosts should run on different hosts. If the host and the secondary virtual machine select the same host, it will be prompted in the compatibility list.

(5) in the "ready to complete" dialog box, display the details of the auxiliary virtual machine, including the host where the secondary virtual machine is located, the location of the configuration file, the location of the hard disk, and so on, as shown in figure 9-5.

(6) return to the vSphere Web Client management console, and the fault-tolerant configuration information for the virtual machine will be displayed in "recent tasks", as shown in figure 9-6.

(7) after turning on fault tolerance for the virtual machine, right-click the name of the virtual machine, and you can see the options in FT, such as turning off FT, migrating the secondary virtual machine, and so on, as shown in figure 9-7.

10 start the fault-tolerant virtual machine
After configuring the fault-tolerant virtual machine, you can start the fault-tolerant virtual machine and view the effect. The main steps are as follows.
(1) right-click the fault-tolerant virtual machine and select "start → to power on" in the pop-up dialog box, as shown in figure 10-1.

(2) Open the console and you can see that the virtual machine is starting, as shown in figure 10-2.

(3) in the vSphere Web Client console, you can see the current fault-tolerant virtual machine on the Summary tab on host 192.168.80.11, as shown in figure 10-3.

(4) Select another ESXi host 192.168.80.12 on the left, and you can see the running secondary virtual machine in the "Virtual Machine" list, as shown in figure 10-4.

When you try to start a fault-tolerant virtual machine when the ESXi host memory is 4GB or 5GB, the prompt "insufficient memory resources are available in the parent resource pool" pops up, as shown in figure 10-5.

In the vSphere Web Client console, each window can be dragged in four directions, as shown in figure 11-1.
