Prerequisites: internal installation of Exchange Server 2007 SP3 or Exchange Server 2010 SP1

Here is an example of Exchange Server 2007 SP3:

This topic explains how to use the Registry Editor to enable the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 password reset tool.

Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access (OWA) includes a feature that allows users to change their passwords. However, this feature requires users to log in to OWA to change their password. Users cannot log in to OWA to access the password change feature if the user's password expires or the user must change his password when he or she logs in for the first time. In earlier versions of Microsoft Exchange, administrators could configure IISADMPWD Web applications to help users. To do this, an administrator may direct users with expired passwords to web pages that can be accessed anonymously to reset their passwords. IISADMPWD is not available in Windows Server 2008. Therefore, the password reset feature may not be available to Exchange 2007 users in a Windows Server 2008 environment.

Exchange 2007 SP3 adds a new feature to the client access server (CAS) role. This feature creates a new Internet Information Services (IIS) 7 module that detects expired passwords and redirects users to the new password change page. This feature is disabled by default. To enable password reset, you must set a registry key.

To enable the password reset feature

Log in to the Exchange server running the CAS role using an account with local administrator privileges.

Start the Registry Editor and locate the following registry subkeys:

HLKM\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ MSExchange OWA

Create the following DWORD values, if they do not already exist:

Value name: REG_DWORD ExpiredPasswordEnabled value Type: ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled value data: 1

Exit Registry Editor.

Note: when ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled is set to a non-zero (0) value, the password reset feature is enabled. If this registry value is missing or set to zero, the password reset feature is disabled.
