Samsung may have lost its camera business to one of its fiercest competitors, Sony. Xiaomi may have switched from a sensor made by Samsung to the main Sony Exmor camera for its latest flagship phone, according to the latest report.

Xiaomi is one of the most popular Android smartphone brands, so its success and decisions are crucial to Samsung's camera business. The supreme flagship version of Xiaomi 11 comes with Samsung ISOCELL GN2 50MP camera sensors-in fact, it is the world's first smartphone to use the GN2 solution.

Taking all factors into account, Samsung's camera division makes money for every 11 Ultra of a millet sold. Given Samsung's partnership with Xiaomi, most people expect Xiaomi's next flagship, the rumored 12 Ultra, to use Samsung's updated ISOCELL sensor.

However, the new report has a different story. It turns out that Samsung may have lost the big contract to Sony, so Xiaomi's 12-Ultra camera system may be based on the rumored Sony Exmor IMX800 sensor.

Sony Exmore IMX800 may be similar to ISOCELL GN2

Sony has not official the rumored Exmor IMX800 sensor, but assuming the leaked specifications are accurate, the resolution of the IMX800 should be similar to that of Samsung's ISOCELL GN2, at 50 megapixels.

On the other hand, Sony's sensors seem to be bigger, which should be to its advantage. At the very least, it allows the camera to take better pictures in more light.

It is not clear why Xiaomi may have decided to end its partnership with Samsung and support Sony instead. The transition from GN to IMX has not been officially confirmed, so there is no need to speculate. But that still means a loss to Samsung's camera business. We will let you know in time.
