Microsoft has introduced some new features in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V, which makes the new features in Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V seem to be less. Production checkpoint

Checkpoints, formerly known as snapshots, existed in Hyper-V from the very beginning. This feature allows administrators to roll back a virtual machine (VM) to a previous point in time without restoring a backup. The problem with using checkpoints is that it doesn't work well for application servers. If used improperly, Hyper-V checkpoints can damage the database and cause serious damage to the application.

Production checkpoints run in a very similar manner, unless they use Volume Shadow Copy Services. When you create or apply a checkpoint, this process is similar to creating and restoring a backup, which allows administrators to avoid the various crashes that can occur when using checkpoints. Production checkpoints are enabled by default in Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V, but you can also revert to the old checkpoint mode if necessary.

Virtual machine isolation

The basic concept behind virtual machine isolation is to create a virtual machine owner structure. Therefore, the virtual machine cannot be moved to other structures or run in other structures. Isolated virtual machines are encrypted to prevent unauthorized access to VM content. Encryption can be achieved by using BitLocker. Virtual TPM is supported in the new version of Hyper-V, which allows virtual machines to be encrypted through BitLocker.

Storage elasticity

In the previous version of Hyper-V, a temporary loss of storage connectivity could cause a virtual machine to fail. Even if an administrator can use failover technology to transfer a failed virtual machine to a node in another cluster, this also requires storage connectivity. And sometimes failover can be fatal.

For example, in a Hyper-V deployment environment, there are some cluster nodes connected to iSCSI targets that experience low bandwidth and intermittent connection failures during peak periods. The virtual machine may be destroyed because the connection fails for more than a minute.

The storage bomb is designed to check for intermittent interruptions in the storage connection of the virtual machine and pauses the virtual machine until the storage connection is restored. However, using cluster-level failover technology is also an approach.

In Windows Server 2012 R2, administrators have the ability to copy files to a virtual machine-even if no network connectivity exists. The replication process uses VMBus without network connectivity. In Windows Server 2016, the PowerShell Direct feature is also based on this concept.

Windows Server 2016 allows administrators to run PowerShell cmdlets or scripts remotely on a virtual machine, even if the virtual machine does not have network connectivity. This process uses the functions of VMBus and Invoke-Command cmdlet. This means using the VMName parameter instead of the cmdlet's ComputerName parameter.
