A research team from the Geospatial Technology Research Group at Jaume I University has designed an advanced geo-location-based virtual assistant that can be used for museum guided tours. AVIMUS is a platform for museum space management that includes an ecosystem of highly interoperable applications at different user levels. It was developed using state-of-the-art technology, including positioning systems based on wireless devices (antennas, repeaters and routers), BLE beacons and GPS signals. The positioning system is designed to locate users of the app based on elements displayed in the museum, which is very important for tour guides.

The platform automatically selects the positioning technology to rely on from all available environments, depending on the environment. In addition, it has a series of functions that can inform managers of possible events in the internal positioning system, suggest the location of beacons in areas where positioning accuracy needs to be improved, and suggest changes to their configuration.

On the one hand, AVIMUS provides a dashboard for museums that enables those responsible for managing exhibitions to define points of interest in multiple languages, including other multimedia information, provides a basic design element (corporate identity) mobile device application that allows the generation of the following information, and provides high-level statistical information on how visitors using the mobile application interact with exhibition elements.

On the other hand, it provides the architecture for mobile applications based on content introduced by museum administrators. Therefore, museums always decide what information should be displayed, whether it is simply a digital copy of the exhibit element (e.g., high-resolution images) or other complementary information not present in the exhibit (e.g., videos related to the exhibit element). The app provides users with an interactive guide to the museum and its exhibits, and also features the ability to suggest personalized routes based on context and user personal data.

Finally, the location algorithm runs on the device itself, so the information needed to estimate the location does not need to be connected to the Internet or recorded on any server external to the device. While the duration and persistence of each element in the exhibit can be recorded for later analysis by museum officials (e.g., detecting fewer exhibit elements than expected), no data is collected, which could compromise user security and privacy. In other words, outside of the environment in which the application is used (i.e., the museum itself), there is no information available to estimate the user's location.

The AVIMUS platform offers universal, modular and adaptable solutions for every exhibition venue, rather than ad hoc solutions. It can be interesting for museums, open-air cultural spaces, universities, amusement parks, city and county cultural promotion spaces (such as commercial spaces). One of its advantages is that it does not rely on a single location technology and can operate in indoor, outdoor and mixed environments without an Internet connection. It is autonomous and can be configured by clients; it can be managed by employees themselves.
