"Intel XMM81605G modems will enable device manufacturers to design smaller, more energy-efficient devices," the company explained. " This can be done without adding complexity. The announcement also noted that modems provide advanced technologies needed to support new millimeter wave spectrum and 5G NR below 6 gigahertz, including frequency division duplex and time division duplex bands from 600 MHz to 6 GHz. The modem will also support peak speeds of up to 6 gigabits per second, three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems currently available.

Intel revealed in September that Nokia and Ericsson would use their technology in the world's first 5G deployments, according to ZDNet. At the end of September, Intel also announced a series of new 5G developments in China and manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE, Tencent and China Mobile.
