Recently, IBM provided a technical preview of the IBM Cloud platform instance at the Think Digital conference, which leveraged Kubernetes to allow it to be deployed in the local IT environment.

Most of the cloud services already provided by IBM are based on Kubernetes. IBM is leveraging this software stack to create an IBM Cloud Satellite, which will enable IBM to extend the scope of its cloud services to the local IT environment to create a hybrid cloud.

IBM Cloud Satellite, which is scheduled to be available later this year, is based on local instances of the Red Hat OpenShift platform running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux instances. IBM Cloud Satellite enables the team to define locations populated by a set of RHEL hosts. In addition, there is a federated instance of Istio that can span multiple Kubernetes clusters, Satellite Mesh, and a tool for automating application-level firewall management, Satellite Link.

Finally, IBM provides Satellite Config tools to provide a global view of the application and control configuration and application deployment as well as visibility between applications.

IBM President Jim Whitehurst (Jim Whitehurst) told the attendees that the hybrid cloud is now imperative because after the COVID-19 pandemic, no one can predict with certainty where the next application load might run.

Whitehurst said that by using the platform developed by Red Hat, the IT team can run once and can now be deployed anywhere. He points out that this capability gives IT teams some control over their IT environment, which goes far beyond having a centralized control plane through which they can only observe the chaos that occurs when using multiple cloud computing platforms.

Instead of trying to manage multiple clouds based on a completely different software stack, but allied with its Red Hat business unit, IBM presents a case of a common software infrastructure that can be deployed locally or on any public cloud. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). As part of this strategy, Red Hat also launched a Web App Marketplace, a market through which organizations can find applications that are certified to run on Red Hat OpenShift.

IBM is taking this concept further to extend the scope of the IBM Cloud control plane to the local IT environment, including edge computing platforms. This approach will enable IBM to compete against the competitive approach to hybrid cloud computing proposed by Google,Microsoft and Oracle.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition to hybrid cloud computing is likely to accelerate as IT organizations are under more pressure to reduce the total cost of IT. One of the most effective ways to achieve this goal is to centrally manage multiple cloud computing platforms. The challenge facing the IT organization now is to determine the best way to achieve this goal.
