It is said that the code snippet found in Apple's next-generation iOS operating system indicates that BMW will integrate the tech giant's "CarKey" API, an NFC-based keyless entry system that can replace iPhone's physical key card.

9to5Mac did not report in detail in the unreleased pre-release version of iOS 14. "evidence" suggests that if the program starts, BMW will become the first carmaker to support "CarKey".

When commented, BMW could not confirm its role in Apple's plans. The German carmaker outlined its commitment to the global digital key standard in a December press release.

The digital key 2.0 revision of the standard was released in October and has added enhanced security protocols by using special "tamper-proof" chips in control devices.

CCC is now moving towards Digital key 3.0, which will use Bluetooth low Power (BLE) and Ultra Wideband (UWB) technologies to provide passive and location-aware keyless access. Apple's latest products, including iPhone 11, support BLE and UWB, which are limited to precise air-to-air file sharing.

Apple was recently discovered to have developed its own proprietary digital key technology in CarKey, which was discovered in the iOS 13.4 beta in February. Little is known about this system, but I believe we can use NFC hardware and possibly Apple Watch on the iPhone to communicate with the computer in the car to unlock, lock and start the car.

The Cupertino technology giant has been working on digital key systems for a year. The company filed a patent application in 2018 describing how iPhone safely controls the car subsystem. Recently, a patent last November stated that this solution, like CCC's Digital Key 3.0, integrates Bluetooth and UWB to determine the relative location of the device before exchanging encryption keys with the target vehicle.
