GPON has high gigabit rate, 92% bandwidth utilization and the ability to support multi-service transparent transmission. at the same time, it can guarantee the quality and level of service, and provide telecom-level network monitoring and service management.

From the aspects of bandwidth utilization, cost, multi-service support and OAM features, it is found that GPON is better than EPON:

1. Bandwidth utilization: on the one hand, EPON uses 8B/10B encoding, which itself introduces a 20% loss, and the transmission rate of 1.25Gbit/s is actually only 1Gbit/s before the protocol is processed. GPON uses scrambling code as the line code, only changing the code, not increasing the code, so there is no bandwidth loss; on the other hand, the total cost of EPON encapsulation is about 34.4% of the total scheduling overhead, while the encapsulation cost of GPON is about 13.7%.

3. Multi-service support: EPON transmits traditional TDM services, which is easy to cause QoS problems. The unique encapsulation form of GPON enables it to support ATM service and IP service very well, and achieves the real full service.

4.OAM function: EPON only standardizes the basic functions such as remote fault indication, remote loopback control and link monitoring, while other advanced OAM functions are independently added by the manufacturer in the equipment. The OAM functions of GPON include bandwidth authorization allocation, dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA), link monitoring, protection switching, key exchange and various alarm functions. From a standard point of view, OAM information of GPON is richer than that of EPON.

What are the two transfer modes of GPON:

One is ATM mode, and the other is GPON encapsulation (GEM) mode. During the transmission of GPON, either ATM mode or GEM mode can be used, or both modes can be used together. Which mode to use should be chosen when the GPON is initialized.
