Anyone who has been to Oracle OpenWorld, or has been following Oracle, will know that Larry Ellison, Oracle's chairman and chief technology officer, likes to fire at AWS during keynote speeches, which has become a common practice.

Oracle Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison (Larry Ellison)

This year, as last year, Ellison not only lashed out at Amazon AWS, but also mentioned other companies such as Google and Facebook, which have recently been criticized for data security issues.

Oracle Gen 2 Cloud

Ellison's keynote speech focused on security, revealing some details of Oracle Gen 2 Cloud (Oracle Cloud 2.0).

The technological foundation of the first-generation cloud has been around for a decade, while Oracle Cloud 2.0 is fundamentally rebuilt, with more security built in, and using the latest machine learning technologies. This makes Oracle the only cloud provider that can provide security and automation capabilities that are uniquely built for the enterprise.

Ellison said Oracle Cloud 2.0 will be officially launched next year (2019). The core part of Oracle Cloud 2.0 is the autonomous database. He also details how Oracle autonomous databases uniquely scan for security threats and install security updates while keeping them running uninterrupted to protect against cyber attacks and data theft.

Not only that, Ellison introduced some of the latest deployment options to extend Oracle autonomous database capabilities, including dedicated Exadata Cloud Infrastructure (Dedicated Exadata Cloud Infrastructure) and Oracle Public Cloud Localization solution (Oracle Cloud at Customer).

Shelling AWS is not safe

Cloud computing is popular in large part because of the rise of virtualization technology, one of the benefits of virtualization technology is that the data of each enterprise can remain independent, but technically, different enterprise data is still located on the same computer, and this brings a series of problems, such as sharing resources leads to resource competition, which affects performance, but also leads to security problems.

Ellison believes that Amazon's flaw is that it runs its "AWS cloud control code" on the same machine. Hackers can gain data access to other enterprises by "changing the AWS control code to crack the system". Oracle "will never put cloud control code on the same computer with customers."

Compared with Amazon, Oracle database has higher performance and lower cost, but the emphasis is on security. Ellison mocked Amazon's database, which is similar to a semi-self-driving car. "if you want to drive it, you'll die," he said. Oracle database "is really self-driven, no one will die."

Ellison also demonstrated that compared with Amazon's database, Oracle is nearly 50% faster than AWS, five times faster in storage and twice as fast in networking. As for the price, Ellison says Amazon's calculated price is three times that of Oracle, while the price of storage is 30 times that of Oracle. Moving data out of AWS is 100 times more expensive than moving it out of the Oracle cloud.

Ellison also hinted that the AWS database comes from Oracle's open source technology (MySQL). In fact, Amazon's approach is not uncommon, and many cloud computing companies are doing it, which led Redis Labs to angrily change its license to prevent these cloud computing companies from making a profit. Manish Gupta, chief marketing officer of Redis Labs, told the media. "their contribution to open source is negligible, not even within 1%."

Two months ago, Redis Labs added a new licensing option for its six Redis Labs modules. It uses an existing free software license called Apache 2.0 and adds a term called Commons Clause to prohibit users from selling the software.

Just before the deadline for this article, according to the latest report from foreign media CNBC, Amazon had problems in migrating from Oracle database to its own Aurora PostgreSQL database, resulting in delays in the delivery of thousands of packages.

Citing Amazon's internal report, CNBC shows that Amazon's own Aurora software is unable to cope with the pressure, resulting in a failure due to the degradation of the overall performance of the database.

Amazon wants to get rid of Oracle database, it doesn't seem easy!
