Configure the vSAN network

Before you can enable vSAN on clusters and ESXi hosts, you must build the necessary networks to host vSAN traffic.

"vSAN is used for distributed storage solutions, which means that data can be exchanged between ESXi hosts that join the cluster." Network preparation for the installation of vSAN includes some configuration work.

Put hosts on the same subnet

In order to achieve the best network performance, hosts must be connected in the same subnet. In vSAN 6.0and later, hosts can also be connected on the same layer 3 network if necessary.

Specify network bandwidth on the physical adapter

Allocate at least 1 Gbps of bandwidth to the vSAN. You can use one of the following configuration options:

1. Specify the 1-GbE physical adapter for the mixed host configuration.

3. If possible, use dedicated or shared 10-GbE physical adapters for mixed configurations.

Configure port groups on a virtual switch

Configure port groups on the virtual switch of vSAN.

1. Assign the physical adapter of the vSAN to the port group as the active uplink.

If you need to use network card groups for network availability, choose a binding algorithm based on the connection between the physical adapter and the switch.

Check the firewall on the vSAN host

VSAN sends messages on certain ports on each host in the cluster. Verify that the host firewall allows these ports to send traffic.
