At present, Wi-Fi has become an indispensable part of life and work, but every time we talk about wireless AP and wireless router selection, it is inevitable to bypass the Wi-Fi protocols / standards supported by the products. the newer Wi-Fi protocol products have longer life cycle and faster transmission speed, but the initial naming rules of Wi-Fi alliance are extremely complex, such as 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac. Perhaps the WiFi alliance is too complicated to consider.

Recently, the Wi-Fi Alliance has introduced a new naming convention to identify the Wi-Fi generation through digital sequences corresponding to Wi-Fi advances. The new naming method is designed to simplify users' Wi-Fi technology assignments.

At the same time, Wi-Fi 6 is announced as an industry logo for products and networks that support the next generation of Wi-Fi based on 802.11ax technology. The generation term can also be used to specify previous Wi-Fi generations, such as 802.11n or 802.11ac. The number sequence includes the following:

Wi-Fi 6 is used to identify devices supporting 802.11ax technology

Wi-Fi 5 to identify devices that support 802.11ac technology

Wi-Fi 4 is used to identify devices that support 802.11n technology.

In the Wi-Fi Alliance statement, many suppliers support the new naming system, including product suppliers, OS suppliers, service providers and many other partners.

In accordance with the regulations of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the following is a list of new features being introduced:

-Uplink and downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) improves efficiency and reduces latency in high demand environments

-1024 Quadrature amplitude Modulation (1024-QAM) provides gigabit peak speeds for emerging bandwidth-intensive use cases

-improved wireless link control (MAC) control signaling increases throughput and capacity while reducing latency

-increased signal duration makes outdoor network operation more reliable

Wi-Fi 6 is expected to provide performance improvements for smart home devices with multiple Internet of things devices, enterprises, and devices running large-scale deployments. The Wi-Fi 6 standard is expected to be finalized next year.

To help users identify devices that provide the latest Wi-Fi experience, Wi-Fi Alliance introduces simplified generation names that may appear in device names and product descriptions. The Wi-Fi devices that support the latest generation of connections are based on the 802.11ax standard and are called Wi-Fi 6 devices.

Identify network connections

The Wi-Fi device can also use the user interface (UI) icon on the display to identify the generation of network connections. The icon displays the Wi-Fi signal indicator and the numerical representation of the connection. As users move between Wi-Fi networks that provide different user experiences, the icon will be adjusted. When the user device displays a signal indicator icon with the number 6 (indicating a Wi-Fi 6 connection), the device is using the highest level Wi-Fi available.

Although in theory terminal devices (mobile phones, laptops, etc.) support WiFi6, matching with WiFi6 wireless routers will get faster speed, but so far we have not seen support for WiFi6 terminals, and even the latest generation of iphoneX products do not support WiFi6.
