Dynamic Host setup Protocol (English: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol,DHCP) is a network protocol of a local area network. It works with UDP protocol and has two main uses: for intranets or network service providers to automatically assign IP addresses, and for users to use intranet administrators as a means of central management of all computers.

The advantage of DHCP is that

1. The network administrator can verify the IP address and other configuration parameters without checking each host

2. DHCP will not lease the same IP address to two hosts at the same time.

3. DHCP administrators can restrict specific computers to use specific IP addresses

4. You can set a number of options for each DHCP scope; clients do not need to reset the IP address when moving between subnets.

Let's try it next. First, we need to prepare a virtual machine with a server2016 and Windows 10 system pre-installed.

My virtual machine is ready here, so let's go to server2016 to add roles and functions. Our server2016 has not yet installed a DHCP function, first of all, we install a DHCP function.

Our DHCP service has been installed and we are going to configure it.

After opening the interface, we right-click ipv4 and click New scope.

Then the next step is the DNS domain name resolution service and the wins server. Instead of configuring it for the time being, click to activate the scope.

Next we will configure the server server with an IP of the same network segment as the IP pool we just set up.

So that our server has been set up, then we open the win10 client and choose to obtain the IP address automatically.

After setting up, we need to open cmd (command prompt) to release the IP address and re-obtain the IP address to see if it can be successful. Two cmd commands, ipconfig / renew (update all adapters) and ipconfig / release (release the IPv4 address of the specified adapter) are used here.

Next let's see if we can communicate with the server server using the ping command.

Successful, now we have achieved the use of DHCP to obtain the IP address, and then interconnect with the server.
