Windows Server 2016 is resilient to deleted objects through a graphical user interface (GUI). Deleted objects can be restored to their original location from the Recycle Bin.

This article describes the steps to enable the Recycle Bin.

Note: once the Recycle Bin is enabled, it cannot be disabled

Enable the Recycle Bin

This feature requires a forest feature level of at least Windows Server 2012, otherwise you cannot see deleted object folders in Active Directory Central Administration.

Start the Active Directory Management Center.

Click enable Recycle Bin in the task pane.

You will see the following confirmation dialog warning: are you sure you want to do this? Once the Recycle Bin is enabled, it cannot be disabled. If you still want to enable the Recycle Bin, click OK.

4. The next dialog informs you that you need to wait for all domain controllers that replicate the Recycle Bin configuration changes in the forest. Click OK. Clicking simply means that you have read the message and will not refresh the Active Directory Central console.

5. If the Recycle Bin has not been enabled, click the help refresh icon near the top upper right corner. When the enable Recycle Bin link in the tasks pane turns grayed out, you can make sure that the Recycle Bin is enabled

6. A new deleted objects container is now available in the Active Directory Central Administration.

7. Any deleted objects are displayed in the deleted object container. We can simply select the object and restore it to its original location.
