After the Android 12L was announced at the Android Development Summit in October, the first beta of this new version of Android finally arrived.

Android 12L is a new version of Android that really focuses on collapsible devices and tablets. As a result, you will not be able to flash it on each pixel. The Android 12L beta is available on the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro tablet. However, you can flash it to the Pixel by registering the Beta plan here. However, because the screen is not large enough, you will not see these changes on any Pixel device. Therefore, it may not be worthwhile to enroll your Pixel 6 in the Beta plan.

So what is available in the first beta?

Compared with the previous developer preview, Android 12L Beta 1 has made some improvements. It also includes a number of bug fixes, optimizations, and security patches for December 2021.

Google says it focuses on improving the user interface of large-screen devices in the Android 12L. This includes notifications, quick setup, lock screen overview, home screen, and so on. Basically, for users whose screens are larger than 600dpi, the new two-column layout will be used for notification bars, lock screens, and other system interfaces. So it can take advantage of the extra space.

With Android 12L, Google also makes multitasking more intuitive and powerful. It now includes a taskbar on the big screen, allowing users to instantly switch to their favorite application or drag and drop the application to split mode. Don't forget that starting with Android 12, users can launch any application in split mode.

Google also improves a number of API and other tools to help developers build for larger screens. For those with foldable devices and tablets running Android, this is a very exciting moment. It looks like Google is trying to make tablets work again.
