Due to the rapid development of Kubernetes and mature open source community, it is the inevitable choice of China Unicom. The Kubernetes-based cloud platform now hosts 50 microservices and all future new developments of China Unicom, we don't have a cloud platform to accommodate hundreds of applications, Kubernetes improves our experience using cloud infrastructure, and there is no alternative technology to replace it. China Unicom also uses Istio in the micro-service framework, Envoy, CoreDNS and Fluentd to solve the problem of cross-cluster service invocation.

What are the effects of this technology?

At China Unicom, Kubernetes has improved operational and development efficiency. Resource utilization has been increased by 20-50%, IT infrastructure costs have been reduced, and deployment time has been reduced from a few hours to 5-10 minutes. This is mainly because of the automation and scalability of Kubernetes, so we can improve the efficiency of operation and maintenance. Currently, only five people maintain our multiple systems. We can't imagine that we can achieve service availability and scalability in such a short time.

What are the challenges for the company's R & D staff?

The Kubernetes cloud platform now has 50 microservices and all future new developments, and developers of China Unicom can easily take advantage of this technology through api without having to do their own development work. The cloud platform provides 20-30 services connected to the company's data center PaaS platform, and provides support such as big data analysis for internal users of branch offices in 31 provinces in China.

This technology is relatively complex, but as long as developers get used to it, they can enjoy the benefits of Kubernetes.

Do you have any suggestions for other enterprises in society?

With the success of the cooperation between China Unicom and Kubernetes, my team and I are eager to give back to the society. The first is to attend meetings and training and provide advice to other companies that are considering similar approaches. Especially for companies with traditional cloud computing systems, I really recommend that they join the cloud computing community. Other companies can use hosting services provided by companies like Rancher, and they have customized this technology, and you can easily take advantage of it.

What do you think of the future development of Kubernetes?

Looking ahead, China Unicom plans to develop more applications on Kubernetes, with emphasis on big data and machine learning. The team is continuing to optimize the cloud platform it has built and hopes to join CNCF's Kubernetes certification program through testing. I also hope to contribute code to the community one day, and if that sounds ambitious, it's because our adoption of Kubernetes is much more convenient than we expected.
