Send out a new version if you don't agree with each other.

The New year is approaching, the cold is accustomed, the leaves are rustling, and the sun is dwindling every day. After more than two months of development, the RancherOS team officially released RancherOS v1.5.0. During this period, CoreOS, who is also in the Container Linux camp, has reentered the IBM from Red Hat. With the change of trend and the situation in the industry, we all strive harder to win a place. Both the accumulation of business users and the growth of community users brought about by changes in the industry are urging us to innovate constantly. It should be said that version 1.5.0 is driven by the needs of users.

Major feature updates

There are so many new features in this version that they cannot be explained all at once. The following only describe some features that are of high concern to users. Individual features are described in detail, and we will continue to publish articles one by one.

Startup performance improvement

The initrd of RancherOS has been compressed in xz format all the time. With the increasing volume of RancherOS, xz compression affects the startup speed of the system more and more. Although the xz format can bring smaller initrd and ISO, we also need to take into account the startup speed. V1.5.0 version of initrd has adopted the gzip format, the file size has increased, but the startup speed has made a qualitative leap. At the same time, we also optimize the mirror load of system-docker and the startup of cloud-init, and deeply optimize the startup speed.

LUKS disk encryption support

Support LUKS, allow users to encrypt disk partitions, and enhance the security of RancherOS in some special scenarios. The running effect is shown in the following figure:

WiFi and 4G support

Intel is making continuous efforts in the field of micro PC, and RancherOS has been incorporated into its ecosystem. We support WiFi and 4G networks, which can be enabled by simple cloud-config configuration, resulting in a very simple user experience, which we will describe in more detail in subsequent articles.

Hyper-V support

Many community users have always wanted to use RancherOS in Hyper-V. Previously, we have been providing users with some ways to implement custom build, but now we officially support it and will continue to maintain it. Both docker-machine and boot from ISO modes can be supported.

We will also bring Azure Cloud support for RancherOS in the next version.

Multiple docker engine support

This is an interesting feature, and currently there is a user docker by default in RancherOS. In v1.5.0, users can use ROS CLI to create multiple user docker engine, and each docker has a separate ROOTFS and network stack, and can easily switch to any docker in console.

Of course, we do not recommend you to use it in production. One of our commercial customers applies this feature to their CI environment, which greatly improves the utilization of resources and reduces the overhead of the number of physical machines.

Improved support for VMware

Vmware has a large user base among the vast number of users of RancherOS. In the previous version, we only made some improvements to docker-machine, but many users also want to use boot from ISO and VMDK. Our related images are also supported, and users can download and use it directly:

Support for ARM

Since Rancher and ARM have started a strategic partnership, we will do a lot of interesting things together. RancherOS's ARM support is also a part of it. Originally, we only supported RPi. Now we provide ARM versions of initrd and vmlinuz, which users can use to launch using iPXE:

We still only support ARM64, and ARM support for v1.5.0 is only experimental and is not recommended in production. We will work with ARM to conduct more extensive testing, and subsequent versions will be more stable.

More friendly customization

More and more enthusiasts in the community are not limited to our official release, they will modify RancherOS to build their own RancherOS according to their own needs. We provide some friendly compilation options so that users can customize their own RancherOS.

Change the default docker engine

Each version of RancherOS has its own default docker engine, and in the user's scenario, you may need an internally approved docker engine, and you want it to be the default version of RancherOS. Then users can specify the docker engine version to build their own RancherOS, taking docker 17.03.2 as an example:

USER_DOCKER_VERSION=17.03.2 make release

Change the default console

RancherOS supports many console, such as ubuntu, alpine, centos, etc. Because our default console is based on busybox, some users don't like it and don't want to switch console every time. Then users can use this method to build a version of the default console that they like. Take alpine console as an example:

$OS_CONSOLE=alpine make release
