Three people and a robot form a team to play games. The robot made a mistake and cost the team a round. Like any good teammate, it admits mistakes.

"Sorry, guys, I made a mistake this time."I know this may be hard to believe, but robots can also make mistakes."

This has happened many times in a study led by Yale University on the effects of robots on human-to-human interaction.

The study will be published on March 9 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Studies have shown that humans on the team, including a robot that expresses vulnerability, communicate more with each other. It was later reported that they had more positive team experience than those who worked with silent robots or robots that issued neutral statements, such as reciting game scores.

"We know that robots can directly affect the way humans interact with them, but it is not clear how robots affect the way humans interact with each other," the doctor said. Yale University Institute of Network Science sociology PhD candidate and lead author of the study. our research shows that robots can affect human-to-human interaction.

As social robots become more and more popular in human society, people encounter them in stores, hospitals and other everyday places, she said. This makes it important to understand how they shape human behavior.

"in this case," Trager said, "we show that robots can help people communicate more effectively in teams."

The researchers conducted an experiment in which 153 people were divided into 51 groups, consisting of three people and a robot. Each group played a tablet-based game. In this game, members work together to build more than 30 rounds of the most efficient railway lines. The group is assigned to one of three conditions, which are characterized by different types of robot behavior. At the end of each round, robots either remain silent, make neutral statements related to the task (such as scores or rounds completed), or express vulnerability through jokes, personal stories or admitting mistakes; all robots occasionally lose a round.

People who work with robots that give fragile speeches spend about twice as much time talking to each other in the game, the study found. They reported that they preferred the experience to the other two groups.

In the game, when robots make fragile statements, there is more dialogue between humans than when they make neutral statements. When robots become fragile rather than silent, dialogue between humans is more evenly distributed.

The experiment also shows that in the weak and neutral robot group, the verbal participation among team members is more equal than the silent robot group, which indicates that the existence of talking robots encourages people to talk to each other in a more fair way.

Nicholas Christakis, a professor of social and natural sciences at Stirling University, said: "We are interested in how society will change because we have incorporated the form of artificial intelligence. When we create a hybrid social system of people and machines, we need to evaluate how to program robot agents so that they do not erode the way we treat each other.

One doctor said it was important to understand the social impact of robots in human space, even if they were not intended for social functions. Candidate for grade d in the department of computer science and co-author of this study.

"imagine that in a factory, the task of a robot is to distribute parts to workers on the assembly line," she said. " Handing over all the fragments to one person creates an awkward social environment that makes other workers question whether the robot thinks it is at a disadvantage in the task. Our findings can provide a reference for the design of robots, and robots can promote social participation, balanced participation and positive experience of team members.
