Today, I will talk to you about how to convert CentOS 8 into CentOS Stream. Many people may not know much about it. In order to make you understand better, the editor has summarized the following for you. I hope you can get something according to this article.

CentOS Stream is a continuously delivered Linux distribution that is ahead of RHEL. It will have a scrolling release, that is, constantly making changes. CentOS will become an upstream version with test patches and updates. With support for Centos Linux 8 discontinued at the end of 2021, the best option is to migrate to the CentOS Stream version.

CentOS 6 expires on November 30th, 2020. Redhat will continue to update CentOS 7 until June 30, 2024. But there will no longer be any CentOS 9 versions.

Are you currently using CentOS 8? If you want to convert to CentOS Stream, you can refer to the following steps:

Step 1: open the CentOS Stream warehouse

# check whether the warehouse has a centos-release-stream warehouse [root@localhost] # dnf search centos-release-stream # install centos-release-stream warehouse [root@localhost] # dnf install-y centos-release-stream

You can use the following command to list all warehouses:

[root@localhost ~] # dnf repolist

Step 2: set the CentOS Stream warehouse as the default

Use the swap option of dnf to remove centos-linux-repos and install centos-stream-repos

[root@localhost ~] # dnf swap centos-linux-repos centos-stream-repos

Step 3: synchronize installed packages to the latest available version

[root@localhost ~] # dnf distro-sync

Step 3 may take a little time to complete. When complete, CentOS 8 will be converted to CentOS Steam version 8.

Verify that the system is the centos-stream version using the following command:

[root@localhost ~] # cat / etc/centos-release or [root@localhost ~] # cat / etc/os-release

After restarting the system, the CentOS Stream 8 version is started by default!

Many CentOS users are not satisfied with the transfer from downstream versions to this project. Many users may prefer to use a fixed distribution, such as Ubuntu,Debian or Fedora. The founder of the CentOS project has launched a new project called Rocky Linux, a branch of RHEL that is currently under way.
