Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

The rules engine acts as a gatekeeper for a user's mailbox. When a message arrives at the user's mailbox, but before the message is displayed in the inbox, the message is evaluated based on an ordered list of rules. Note that this occurs only on arrival and only in your inbox. These rules consist of three parts: condition, operation and exception.

Starting with the rule at the top of the rule list, the rule engine performs the following steps until it reaches the end of the rule list:

Check the message to determine if it meets all the conditions specified in the rule.

If all conditions are met, continue with the evaluation of step 2.

If it does not meet all the conditions, the rule engine loads the next rule in the list of rules, starting with step 1.

Check the message to determine if it satisfies any of the exceptions specified in the rule.

If it satisfies any exceptions, the rule engine loads the next rule in the list of rules, starting with step 1.

If it does not meet any exceptions, the evaluation will continue with step 3.

Perform the action specified in the rule on the message.

If the stop processing more rules action is specified, the rule engine performs all other actions on the message and then exits without evaluating any other rules for the message.

If the stop processing more rules action is not specified, the rule engine loads the next rule in the list of rules, starting with step 1.

The following figure shows the process followed by the rules engine.

Figure 1: rule engine overview

Shortly after this rule is created, a new message appears. Colleague Hope sends messages to the distribution list. If we mentally perform the work of the rules engine, the message meets all the conditions (it is sent to the 'Internet cat video enthusiast'), it will not encounter any exceptions (it is not from the 'mom'), so the rules apply and the message is moved to the 'Cats' folder.

The following figure shows how rules are applied to incoming messages.

Figure 2. Incoming messages are processed by rules
