Google on Thursday launched APP, a toilet location service developed in partnership with the Indian government, to help users find public toilets and combat India's national open defecation problem.

Google has launched the toilet location APP, which is used to help people find clean public bathrooms in Delhi and Central provinces. The APP, launched on Thursday, has a number of features that allow users to rate the cleanliness of toilets, describe the style of toilets and indicate whether they charge or not.

According to media reports, Google's APP allows users to enter keywords such as "toilet" and "bathroom", as well as Hindi words such as "swachh" and "shulabh" to search the nearest bathroom.

Sanket Gupta, product manager of Google Maps India, said at the toilet location APP promotion event in Delhi: "in areas where services are available, if you search for 'public toilets' on Google Maps, you will see a list of nearby toilets, as well as their respective addresses and opening hours."

"for example, if you are traveling on National Highway 8 in Gurugram, it is very difficult to find a public toilet, usually the only option is to go to a nearby restaurant or coffee shop," he said. "if you can get this information at your fingertips, things will be much easier."

Finding a safe and hygienic toilet is a big problem in India, with some official surveys showing that about 70% of Indian households do not have a toilet, so people are forced to defecate anywhere. Google's toilet location service APP is designed to help them better solve this problem.

But critics of the APP say the service applies only to areas with good Internet coverage and where people use smartphones, while most people who do not have access to good sanitation are in rural areas.

According to Indian government statistics, more than 5 million people defecate in the open air in Delhi province. Recent figures from the Delhi Urban Housing improvement Council (DUSIB), another slum development agency, show that there are 259 open-air defecation places in Delhi.
