Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--
MediaTek recently revised its annual smartphone chip shipment forecast slightly, following reports that Apple and China's leading Android smartphone makers have cut orders in the industry, according to a recent survey by Fubon Investment Consulting. Its overall shipments will be reduced to 570 million, while Tianji 9000 chips will be reduced from 10 million to 5-6 million. Demand in some important consumer electronics markets, including mainland China, has weakened in the past two months due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, global inflation and the outbreak of some cities in mainland China.
This has led global smartphone makers to cut their shipping targets for this year. These manufacturers are also cutting back their parts orders. Apple has reportedly cut orders for the iPhone 13 and iPhone SE 3 by 2 to 3 million units respectively.
Guo Mingyi also said that the Android mobile phone brand's 2022 shipping plan has so far cut about 170 million orders. This accounts for 20% of the planned shipments in 2022, of which more than 70% of the orders are MediaTek chips. To sum up, global smartphone shipments have been reduced by more than 200 million units.
Fubon had previously warned that market expectations for MediaTek's Tianji 9000 chip were too high. According to the latest survey results, shipments of Tianji 9000 chips are likely to decrease significantly in 2022. As the Tianji 9000 chip has a higher unit price and a higher gross profit margin, once the shipment volume is revised, it will also affect the overall gross profit margin performance of MediaTek.
Looking forward to the second half of the year, Fubon pointed out that smartphone orders are not well known due to the continued impact on China.
In addition, JPMorgan Chase Securities said demand for mid-range 5G phones in China is weak. MediaTek's 5G system-on-chip (SoC) may cut prices for the first time in the second quarter, by about 5-10 per cent.
HSBC Securities said the global economic outlook is uncertain. Shipments in 2022 can barely maintain 1.3 billion units. In addition, forecasts for 5G smartphone shipments are more conservative than ever.
Fubon Investment Consulting forecasts that global smartphone shipments will be 1.318 billion in 2022, down about 3 per cent from 1.352 billion in 2021.
Major suppliers in the smartphone supply chain are Daliguang, MediaTek, Hon Hai and Pegatron. We also have Yujing Optoelectronics, Lianyong, Tai Optoelectronics, Taijun, Zhen Ding KY, Wen Mao and so on.
