To get started, you will need the following five things:

1. Two USB flash drives (or DVD-R)

I recommend using USB flash drives to install Windows and Ubuntu because they are faster than DVD. This is usually beyond doubt, but creating a bootable medium will erase everything on the flash drive. So make sure the flash drive is empty or contains files that you no longer need.

If your computer does not support booting from USB, you can create DVD media instead. Unfortunately, because the DVD burning software on my computer seems to be different, I can't use this process. 2. One Windows 10 license

If your computer already has Windows 10 installed, the license will be installed on your computer, so you don't have to worry about typing it during installation. If you buy a retail version, you should have a product key that needs to be entered during installation.

3. Windows 10 Media creation tool

Download and run the Windows 10 Media creation tool. Once you run this tool, it will guide you through the steps required to create Windows installation media on a USB or DVD-R. Note: even if you have installed Windows 10, it is a good idea to create a bootable media, in case the system goes wrong and requires you to reinstall.

4. Ubuntu 18.04installation media

Download the Ubuntu 18.04 ISO image.

5. Etcher software (used to make a USB driver that can boot Ubuntu)

A tool for creating bootable media for any Linux distribution, I recommend Etcher. Etcher runs on the three major operating systems (Linux, MacOS, and Windows) without allowing you to overwrite the partitions of the current operating system.

Once you have downloaded and run Etcher, click Select Image and point to the Ubuntu ISO image you downloaded in step 4. Next, click on the drive to select your flash drive, and then click "Flash!" Start the process of converting a flash drive into a Ubuntu installer. If you are using a DVD-R, use the DVD burning software on your computer to complete this process. )

Install Windows and Ubuntu

You should be ready, and at this point, you should complete the following:

Create Windows installation media

Create Ubuntu installation media

There are two ways to install. First of all, if you have installed Windows 10, you can have the Ubuntu installer resize the partition and then install it in a blank area. Or, if you haven't installed Windows 10, you can install it (Windows) on a smaller partition during the installation process (I'll describe how to do it below). The second method is preferred and has a low error rate. Chances are you won't have any problems, but manually installing Windows and giving it a smaller partition before installing Ubuntu is the easiest way.

If you already have Windows 10 installed on your computer, please skip the Windows installation instructions below and continue to install Ubuntu.

Install Windows

Insert the created Windows installation media into your computer and boot it up. How this is done depends on your computer. But most have a shortcut that can be pressed to display the startup menu. For example, on a Dell computer, it is the F12 key. If the flash drive is not displayed as an option, you may need to restart your computer. Sometimes, it can only be displayed by inserting media before starting the computer. If you see a message like "Please press any key to boot from the installation media", press any key. Then you should see the following interface. Select your language and keyboard style, and then click Next.

Click install now to start the Windows installer.

On the next screen, it will ask for your product key. If you do not have a key because your computer has Windows 10 installed at the factory, please select "I do not have a product key". The password is automatically activated when the password is updated after installation. If you have a product key, enter the key and click next.

Select the version of Windows you want to install. If you have a retail version, the cover tag will tell you what version you have. (LCTT) will tell you what version you have. Otherwise, it can usually be found in the accompanying documentation on your computer. In most cases, it is either Windows 10 Home Edition or Windows 10 Professional Edition. Most computers with the home version have a simple label that says "Windows 10", while the professional version clearly indicates it.

Check the check box to accept the license agreement, and then click next.

After accepting the agreement, you have two installation options available. Select the second option, "Custom: install only Windows".

Next, your current hard drive configuration should be displayed.

Your results may look different from mine. I have never used this hard drive before, so it is completely unallocated. You may see one or more partitions of your current operating system. Select each partition and remove it. LCTT Note: make sure you don't have the data you need in these partitions! )

At this point, your computer screen will display the entire unallocated disk. Create a new partition to continue with the installation.

You can see that I split the drive in half (or nearly half) by creating a partition the size of 81920MB (nearly half of 160GB). Give Windows at least 40GB, preferably 64GB or more. Leave the rest of the hard drive unallocated as a partition for later installation of Ubuntu.

Your result should look like this:

Verify that the partition looks reasonable, and then click next. You will now begin to install Windows

If your computer successfully boots into the Windows desktop environment, you can move on to the next step.

Install Ubuntu

Whether you have installed Windows or completed the above steps, you have now installed Windows. Now use the Ubuntu installation media you created earlier to boot into Ubuntu. Continue to insert the installation media and boot your computer from it. Similarly, the shortcut to launch the boot menu varies from computer model to computer model, so if you are not sure, please refer to your documentation. If all goes well, when the installation media is loaded, you will see the following interface:

Here, you can choose "try Ubuntu" or "install Ubuntu". Don't install it now. Instead, click "try Ubuntu". When you finish loading, you should be able to see the Ubuntu desktop.

By clicking "try Ubuntu", you have chosen to try Ubuntu before installation. In Live mode, you can try Ubuntu to make sure everything is all right before you install it. Ubuntu is compatible with most PC hardware, but it's best to test it in advance. Make sure you have access to the Internet and can play audio and video properly. Logging in to YouTube to play videos is a great way to do all this at once (LCTT). If you need to connect to the wireless network, click the network icon in the upper right corner of the screen. There, you can find a list of wireless networks and connect to your wireless network.

When ready, double-click the "install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS" icon on your desktop to start the installer.

Select the language you want to use for the installation process, and then click continue.

Next, select the keyboard layout. When you are finished, click continue.

There are some options on the screen below. You can choose a normal installation or minimize installation. For most people, a regular installation is ideal. Advanced users may want to install minimized installations with fewer applications by default. In addition, you can choose to download updates and whether to include third-party software and drivers. I suggest checking both boxes at the same time. When you are finished, click continue.

The next screen will ask you if you want to erase the disk or set up a dual boot. Since you are a dual boot, please select "install Ubuntu, co-exist with Windows 10" and click "install now".

The following screen may appear. If you install Windows from scratch and leave unpartitioned space on disk, Ubuntu will automatically set its own partition in a blank area, so you will not see this screen. If you have installed Windows 10 and it takes up the entire drive, this screen appears and gives you an option to select a disk at the top. If you have only one disk, you can choose how much space to steal from Windows to Ubuntu. You can use the mouse to drag the middle vertical line left or right to take some space from one partition and give it to the other, adjust it the way you want, and then click install now.

You should see a confirmation screen showing what the Ubuntu plan is going to do. If everything is all right, click continue.

Ubuntu is being installed in the background. However, you still need to make some configurations. When Ubuntu tries to find your location, you can click on the map to narrow it down to make sure your time zone and other settings are correct.

Next, fill in the user account information: your name, computer name, user name and password. Click continue when you are finished.

Now that you have it, the installation is complete. Continue and restart your computer.

If everything goes according to plan, you should see a similar screen when the computer restarts, select Ubuntu or Windows 10, and the other options are for troubleshooting, so we generally don't choose to enter it.
