Last week, Google released a second developer preview of Android 13, which contains a number of changes and new features-some of which are not ready for prime time. This update includes code that points to future improvements to the Android built-in screen saver, which may appear in a future version of beta or in the final version of Android 13.

Android has supported screen savers for many years, although they are not necessary (or useless at all) on most mobile devices. However, a refocus on screen savers may be part of some changes in Android 13 that are specific to desktop computers. Android 13 reportedly includes a new class for "complications" in its code base, which appears to be a piece of data covering the top of the screen saver.

Google's smartwatch software platform Wear OS also has a small information panel called complications. They may play the same role here, and Android 13 currently includes complication codes related to air quality, "actor information" (possibly Chromecast), date, time and weather.

The new screen saver code may be related to Android 13's improved desktop support, but it also helps unify many of Android's code bases. For example, if Android itself can generate a photo wallpaper screen saver with weather information and other visible data, then Google does not have to build different versions of Android TV and Google TV.

Android 13 Developer Preview 2 also adds runtime permissions to apply notifications, improved Japanese text wrapping, new text conversion API for Japanese and other languages, COLR fonts, MIDI 2.0, Bluetooth LE audio, and other changes. Google is expected to release its first Android 13 Beta sometime in April and a stable version sometime after July. Android 12 was released in October last year and Android 11 in September 2020, so the schedule for Android 13 is likely to follow the same pattern.
