Deskpool is a desktop virtualization management software that supports virtualization platforms such as Hyper-V and XenServer. Deskpool adopts the concept of integrated design, packaging the components needed for desktop virtualization in a virtual machine image, which greatly simplifies the difficulty of virtual desktop deployment. After the release of Deskpool 2.1, some users reported that the process of making templates by Deskpool is complex, time-consuming and error-prone.

In order to enable users who have first contact with Deskpool to quickly build a demo environment, the installation wizard of DeskpoolDeskpool version 2.3 introduces the function of "installing Deskpool demo environment", through which you can quickly build a demo environment in about 10 minutes [Note 1]. The principle of this function is as follows: the installation disk contains the configuration of a demonstration environment and the backup of the desktop template, and the installation wizard restores a demonstration environment of Deskpool through the backup and recovery function of the Deskpool system. This article describes the steps to quickly build a Deskpool demo environment in this way.

Prepare before installation:

1. A server, configured with CPU i5 or above, memory ≥ 8GB, hard disk preferably SSD.

2. DHCP service is enabled in the network.

3. Install the Deskpool 2.3U disk, or download the Deskpool 2.3installation file (the unzipped directory is DeskpoolInstallV2.3.0).

Step 1: install the Windows Server 2012R2 version.

Deskpool 2.3 installs the Windows Server 2012R2 installer in the USB flash drive, which can be started and installed with Windows Server 2012R2.

The process of installing Windows Server 2012R2 is relatively simple. Note a few points:

1. Select either the standard version (server with GUI) or the data center version (server with GUI).

2. Select a custom installation. If there is a partition, delete the existing partition.

3. After the installation is completed, you need to set the password of the administrator account.

Step 2: install the Hyper-V role and create a virtual switch.

The Hyper-V role is required for Deskpool to run. The Hyper-V role can be installed manually through Windows's Server Administration, or you can install Hyper-V automatically through the Deskpool wizard.

The process of installing through Server Administration is as follows:

After the wizard is finished, you will be prompted to restart the server, and after the server is restarted, you can complete the installation of the Hyper-V role.

It can also be installed through PowerShell scripts. The installation command is: Install-WindowsFeature Hyper-V, which installs Hyper-V but does not create a virtual switch.

Step 3: install Deskpool and restore a demo environment through the Deskpool 2.3 installation wizard.

When you install the demo environment, you need to restore a desktop template. As the backup file of the template is relatively large, if you recover directly from the USB disk, the speed will be relatively slow. It is recommended that you copy to your hard drive first, and then execute the installation wizard. This article is to copy the DeskpoolInstallV2.3.0 of the USB drive to the hard disk D, and then execute the installation wizard.

1. Execute the installation wizard and select "install Deskpool Desktop Management system" and "install minimized Deskpool Demo Environment". Since the Hyper-V role has been installed in the second step, the wizard shows that Hyper-V has been installed. Select next to start the Deskpool installer.

2. Select the storage pool and virtual network.

Deskpool allows you to create three candidate storage pools. During the Deskpool configuration process, specifically configure the purpose of the candidate storage pool. Also specify the virtual network for the Deskpool management virtual machine.

3. After the Deskpool installation program is completed, the installation wizard will start the Deskpool recovery tool to restore the demonstration environment of Deskpool.

4. The Deskpool demo environment has been restored successfully. The following information is prompted. After the Deskpool virtual machine is started, you can log in to Deskpool.

5. Log in to the demo environment and look at the "desktop computer". You can see that the system is creating a virtual desktop, waiting for it to be finished.

Step 4: connect the system through Jay Cloud thin client or DeskpoolClient

Here, take DeskpoolClient as an example to connect to the Deskpool system

After installation, start DeskpoolClient and set the server address to the address of Deskpool.

Then log in with the uesr1 password user1 to connect to the desktop.

Note 1: does not include the time to install the Windows Server 2012R2 and Hyper-V roles. The installation speed is related to the disk speed.
