Tech companies love to tout how their products are more environmentally friendly, but that's usually little more than marketing. For example, while Apple uses smaller boxes and more recyclable materials in its new products, the company also opposes right-to-repair legislation that could extend the life of older iPhones and Mac computers and keep them out of landfills. Samsung is now taking another small step toward sustainability by promising to sell replacement parts to anyone for repairs.

Repair shops can already buy replacement parts for Samsung phones and tablets, but starting "this summer," Samsung says anyone can buy them for self-repair. The program will start with the Galaxy S20 and S21 series as well as the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus. Samsung will sell display assemblies with integrated batteries, rear glass panels and charging ports, and you can return used parts to Samsung for recycling.

"Samsung consumers will receive genuine device parts, repair tools, and intuitive, step-by-step repair guides," the company said in a press release. "Samsung is partnering with iFixit to create repair guides, which seems to be a growing trend for electronics manufacturers-Valve recently partnered with iFixit to sell parts and create repair guides for Steam Deck consoles.

Samsung said it plans to expand parts availability to more devices. The new Galaxy S22 series is noticeably missing from the current list, and it's a bit odd to include only one Galaxy Tab model. Still, assuming Samsung follows through on its plans (and replacement parts are inexpensive), moving functioning phones and tablets away from landfills is a good move.
