I ran into several colleagues last week who needed to install SQL Server Management Studio separately for data query, and I recommend using the SqlOps tool instead.

Introduction to SqlOps

Function: cross-platform SQL Server development and management tools.

Advantages: green, compact.

Disadvantages: maintenance plan and SQL Server agent management are not supported.

Background:

For versions prior to SQL Server 2016, the SSMS installation package is embedded in the service installation package, which requires a complete service installation package. The file is large and usually requires several gigabytes. It is recommended to install the SSMS customer only when installing the service.

Since SQL Server 2016, the SSMS installation package is independent of the service installation package. Microsoft has accelerated the update frequency of SSMS. Currently, the latest version is 17.4.The installation will not upgrade or overwrite the previous version, but will coexist with the old version and download the latest SSMS.

Because of this, Microsoft needs a tool to simplify cross-platform development, so Microsoft launched a new project and released the cross-platform database development tool SQL Operations Studio (SqlOps). The tool is a branch of Visual Studio Code and can be run on Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

Note: higher versions of SQL Server management tools are downwards compatible with lower versions of SQL Server services.
