Microsoft on Tuesday announced the launch of Office365 Video, a YouTube-like streaming service that allows companies and large organizations to publish internal video content for communication and training.

The Redmond, Washington-based company made fun of Office365 videos on TechEd for the first time in May.

"Office365Video provides organizations with a secure, company-wide destination for posting, sharing and discovering video content," Mark Kashman, senior product manager of the Office365 team, said on his blog on Tuesday.

Cashman uses video as an internal communication tool, citing new employee positioning, management information and employee training as examples. Employees can also contribute in the "community" section, although most companies may be dissatisfied with the funny part of the cat.

The service will be launched to companies that have signed up for Office365s in the next few days. First release the pre-release plan, and then release it to other companies in early 2015.

Video is available only to users of Office365's enterprise programs (E1 to E4) and university programs (A2 to A4). It does not provide consumers, subscribers or companies with plans for small businesses, such as business necessities, business and business premiums.

Cashman also said that government agencies under the Office365 program would get the video at some point, but he did not provide a timetable.

Another requirement is the online sharing point, which is the off-site part of corporate and academic programs. However, the increasingly popular Office365ProPlus lacks a hire-purchase plan for organizations that decide to keep back-end services such as Share Point and Exchange in the workplace.

While Office365Video has elements of consumer streaming services such as Google YouTube, it is strictly an internal affair: it is provided only to employees and then only to employees who assign access to IT administrators.

The video will be cloud-based-after the video is uploaded to the service and stored online at the sharing point, Microsoft encodes it as streaming and pushes it from its Azure media service as needed. Microsoft said employees would be able to watch videos on personal computers, tablets and smartphones.

However, because Office365 requires Adobe Flash, there are significant obstacles on mobile devices. "Office365 video uses Adobe FlashPlayer for adaptive streaming and secure video transmission. To watch video, you must install Adobe FlashPlayer. This means that Apple's iPhone and iPad cannot transfer content from Office365 videos.

Cashman suggests that Office365Online may appear on flash-free devices in the future. "in the coming months, we will share more news about how best to interact with video portals through mobile devices," he said.

Microsoft also plans to expand Office365's video capabilities, including the ability to publish mixed-production content from Office within Power Point 2013 on Windows. Office Mix is well received as a way for teachers to create content, but it can also be used by staff to produce and publish modified presentations that were originally generated in Power Point.

Microsoft plugged in the Office Mix-Office365 video connection, but did not specify its delivery schedule, saying only that "I'll be right there."

Ironically, Microsoft released a demo of the new service on its competitor YouTube.
