Under the SQL Server 2012 license model, we will look at the license model released by SQL Server 2012 in more detail

Licensing based on Computing Power-with the release of SQL Server 2012, licensing for computing power will be kernel-based

Kernel-based licenses are available for enterprise and standard editions. The Server+ CAL licensing model is also available for the standard edition.

To license a physical server, you must license all cores of the server, and at least four kernel licenses are required on each physical processor of the server.

License based on user-Server + CAL Business Intelligence Edition and Standard version available Server + CAL license model.

This licensing model can be used in situations where the number of users can be calculated steadily at any time (for example, internal database applications).

To access a SQL Server using the server + CAL licensing model, each user must have the same version or newer version of SQL Server CAL (for example, to access a SQL Server 2008 SE server, a user will need a SQL Server 2008 or 2012 CAL).

Each SQL Server 2012 CAL can access multiple licensed SQL Server, including the new SQL Server 2012 business intelligence server and previous versions of the enterprise server.

To facilitate the transition to the new licensing model, SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition will be available in server + CAL mode by June 30, 2012.

All existing enterprise editions that use the server + CAL licensing model and Software Assurance (SA) can be upgraded to SQL Server 2012, and Software Assurance (SA) can continue to provide future software updates. These licenses will continue to run under the Server + CAL licensing model.

The existing Enterprise Edition license under the Server + CAL license model can be upgraded to SQL Server 2012, which will be limited to 20 cores for server deployment. These 20 core restrictions apply only to SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition server licenses in Server + CAL mode, and the appropriate number / version of SQL Server CALs licenses are still required for access.

Database Virtualization-Cloud Optimization licenses you can save money by licensing a single database virtual machine (VMs) when the database uses only a fraction of the computing power of the physical server.

To license a virtual machine based on a core license, you only need to pay for the virtual core assigned to the virtual machine (at least 4 core licenses per VM)

To license a virtual machine in server + CAL mode (business intelligence version and standard version of SQL Server 2012), you can buy a server license and purchase the relevant SQL Server CAL for each user

Each licensed virtual machine covered by Software Assurance (SA) can be moved frequently in your server farm or third-party host or cloud service provider

Under a fully licensed server licensed by the Enterprise Edition under SA, it allows you to deploy an unlimited number of database virtual machines on the server (or server farm), achieving future savings in highly consolidated virtual deployments
