After the Windows 10 May Update, users started reporting that Chrome, Edge, Outlook, OneDrive, and other apps stopped syncing for no reason.
This annoying password glitch also deletes cookies stored in the browser, requiring users to log back into their apps every time they restart Windows.
Although this password issue doesn't affect Windows 10 logins, it does affect other apps such as Outlook, OneDrive and Office.
Over the weekend, Microsoft confirmed that the vulnerability was affecting Outlook, Chrome and other apps.
Microsoft notes that users who install Windows 10 v2004 Build 19041.173 or later may find that Outlook and other apps no longer remember your password.
This issue occurs when certain tasks in the Windows 10 Task Scheduler are configured in a certain way. The solution is to disable these tasks using Task Scheduler until fixes are available.
For example, HP customer participation in utility tasks causes the system to fail to remember passwords. Similarly, some other unknown application may also cause system-wide password amnesia.
It's unclear when Microsoft will fix the issue, but Edge developers have revealed it could take a long time before Microsoft fixes the issue with monthly Windows Update updates.
Microsoft offers a temporary solution:
1. Right-click the Windows 10 Start button and select Windows PowerShell (Administrator) from the pop-up menu.
2. Copy the command below, paste it into an open Windows PowerShell window, and press Enter.
Get-ScheduledTask | foreach { If (([xml](Export-ScheduledTask -TaskName $_.TaskName -TaskPath $_.TaskPath)).GetElementsByTagName("LogonType"). '#text' -eq "S4U") { $_.TaskName } }
3. If tasks are listed in PowerShell output, make a note of them.
Next, go to the Windows Task Scheduler and disable all tasks found in the above command. The procedure is as follows:
1. In the Windows 10 search box, type Task Scheduler and open the Task Scheduler app.
2. Find the task you want to disable in the window.
3. Right-click the task and select Disable.
4. Restart Windows after disabling tasks.
