Proxmox VE is a set of open source virtualization software that supports KVM and LXC. Deskpool is a desktop virtualization management system. Support virtualization platforms such as Hyper-V, XenServer, Proxmox, etc. This paper introduces the process of building Deskpool desktop virtualization system based on Proxmox.

Prepare before installation:

1. One server, configured with CPU i5 or above, memory ≥ 8GB, hard disk SSD.

2. DHCP service is enabled in the network.

3. Proxmox VE5.4 ISO image (described in Proxmox VE5.4 in this article)

5. USB flash drive production tool: UltraISO

Step 1: install Proxmox VE5.4

1. UltraISO makes Proxmox5.4 system U disk boot disk.

2. Start the installation of the server USB disk and install Proxmox5.4 according to the default prompt.

3. After the installation is completed, the browser enters the IP:8006 of the https://Proxmox server to enter the Proxmox5.4 management page (the IP of the Proxmox server is the IP text IP set at the time of installation is 192.168.1.22)

Step 2: restore Deskpool and Windwos backup virtual machine

1. Download Deskpool 3.1and Windows template locally

2. Click the deploy.bat of the folder in the download and enter the IP address and password of the proxmox server as prompted (press enter after each prompt). When the progress bar is 100%, the script has uploaded the Deskpool and the template (the selected template) to the proxmox server.

3. Log in to proxmox and go to the backup library to see the downloaded files.

4. Select backup file and click to restore, and Proxmox automatically restores the virtual machine (each backup performs the same operation, and each operation waits for the completion of the task before performing the next operation)

5. After the recovery is complete, you can view the restored virtual machine.

6. Perform template conversion for Windows template virtual machines (note: only for virtual machines restored at the beginning of Win7), as shown below

After the conversion is successful, it becomes as follows

Step 3: initialize the Deskpool system

1. Start the Deskpool virtual machine, and check the IP of Deskpool after startup (as shown below: DeskpoolIP is 192.168.1.208)

2. Enter https://DeskpoolIP in the browser (the IP article seen in the previous step of Deskpool IP is entered as https://192.168.1.208)

Note: the Deskpool management platform uses the https secure access protocol by default. When you access Deskpool URL for the first time, you need to set the trust to the link according to different browser prompts.

The default administrator login account is: user name: admin password: deskpool

3. Click the start button in the navigation prompt window to enter the system initialization navigation task, as shown in the following figure, prompt the user to initialize the main contents of the configuration, and click "continue" to start the system initialization configuration.

Configure virtualization: select Proxmox to enter the Proxmox server IP address and user (root) and password, and click next to enter the configuration resource pool.

Configure the resource pool:

Desktop Storage Pool Select local-lvm Network Resource Pool configuration Proxmox Virtual Network is generally vmbr0

Click next to enter the cluster configuration after the configuration is completed, as shown in the figure below.

Configure the cluster: choose to create a new Deskpool cluster. Click next to enter the configuration user database

Configure the user database: select the local user database and click next.

Set fixed IP Select "Yes" Click the finish button

Step 4: create a template

After completing the system initialization settings, click continue to enter the creation template.

1. Choose to import the Deskpool template directly (the Deskpool template is the template name of the template converted in step 2 and click Import)

Step 5: create a desktop pool

After the template is created successfully, the Deskpool navigation then prompts the user to start creating the desktop pool, as shown in the following figure. Desktop pool is the basic model for Deskpool to automatically manage desktops. It refers to a collection of desktop virtual machines created based on the same template, with the same specifications, types and maintenance policies. Click to continue to the configure Desktop Pool page

Enter the name of the desktop pool, select a template and network resource for the desktop pool, and enter a named prefix and suffix for the input virtual machine. Click next in the following figure to configure the desktop pool policy

Configure desktop pool policy: enter the maximum number of desktop virtual machines in the desktop pool and the parameters of pre-created desktop virtual machines, and select the desktop type. Click next to enter the configuration storage

Configure storage: set whether the user data disk is enabled, configure the user data disk name and capacity. The storage pool for the user data disk is specified in the system initialization phase.

Step 6: create a user

After the desktop pool is created, the Deskpool navigation directs the user directly to the account management page.

1. Create a group (user-> Group Click add) enter the group name and select the desktop pool

2. Create users in batch (can be created separately)

Step 7: it is recommended to use the Jay Cloud thin client (JC10 JC30) to log in to the Deskpool system and connect to the desktop.

You can also log in to Deskpool using the Jay Cloud thin client system JYOS. You can prepare an old PC, download and install JYOS, and transform the old machine PC into a thin client. JYOS asks Baidu to search JYOS for downloading and installing the software.

Note: if the desktop pool uses the Spice protocol

You need to install Virt-Viewer on PC and log in using a browser.
