Amazon announced that starting today, Amazon Alexa devices and monitors will be able to play video streaming profiles from selected smart home cameras.

Alexa customers in the United States have home security cameras from Ring, August, Arlo, Cloud Cam and Logitech, and they can view camera history on Echo Show, Echo Spot, Fire TV and Fire Tablet.

With a supported camera, you can say "Alexa, show me what just happened at the front door" and watch the recent video recorded from the camera.

You can also say, "Alexa, display the latest events from [add configuration camera name].

Whether you configure an Alexa-connected camera by location, camera name, number, or other means, the last clip will be played on your Alexa-compatible monitor in response to any of the above requests.

If you have an Alexa-compatible smart home security camera, but it is not in the list of already supported cameras, you may have to wait a few days to include new features. Amazon's Alexa skills development team has added Camera RecapAPI (Application programming Interface) to the smart home skill API, so developers can today enable video history for other cameras.

Alexa does not store video files from smart home cameras, but only media metadata, which is equivalent to a directory entry or a restaurant menu item. When a customer requests to view a specific video material from a specified camera, the availability of the video depends on the storage capability of the smart home camera. For example, if your camera stores events from the past seven days, you will not be able to view the lens from eight days ago. Cameras may also have various subscription modes that restrict access based on time or storage capacity.

In the future, Amazon plans to make video content replay "more useful and enjoyable for customers."

American developers have made their first breakthrough in new Alexa skills, but Amazon plans to increase support for international locations soon.

If you are a developer or are using the Alexa skills kit, you must use the smart home skill APIV3 (version 3). The V3 authentication model enables you to send asynchronous events to Alexa.

There are additional security and performance requirements for smart home cameras to match camera power skills. These requirements and additional information for creating Alexa skills are available on the blogs of Alexa developers.
