Shulou(Shulou.com)05/31 Report--
Even if you get used to it, your fingers have all the necessary muscle memory, and typing on a smartphone is still annoying, especially if you need to write longer. This is why technology companies make a lot of efforts to reduce the trouble in the process. We can do voice input and slide input, but the biggest help may be text prediction.
Text prediction uses AI (what else?) Gives you advice on the words you have started typing, so you can tap to finish typing or select the next word. Fortunately, AI doesn't understand what we're thinking, but relies on a trained text database to guess what you want to type.
Different keyboards have their own prediction models, and not everyone is satisfied with the way they work. I've been typing Google Gboard on every Android phone I've ever used. With the passage of time, I found some interesting things.
I'm used to Gboard's word prediction function, and now I hope I don't have to finish this word. I type in a letter or two and then check predictions that usually contain the words I want to type. But sometimes it's not. I'll add a letter or two and check it again. Depending on the length of the word, this process may be repeated two or three times. By then, if I don't check the associative words often, I may have finished typing by myself.
It is the product of our habits. We have our own routines and we like to stick to them. Google's AI can be fully utilized, especially when it comes to texting. Whether it's typing my favorite morning greetings or common phrases like "go to my parents' house on weekends," Gboard can often help me write complete sentences by tapping on suggestions. In some cases, I was very frustrated that these recommendations did not go the way I had hoped. Actually, I have to type everything myself.
What's even cooler is that even fictional words or nicknames end up in the suggestion pool. So, if you often ask someone if they want "fast food", this is what Google gives you.
How good can the prediction be?
Obviously, there is room for improvement in text prediction, but more access is needed if the keyboard is to become more useful and needs to make a bigger leap. I know people hate sharing our information with the entities we want, but listen to me! For example, if Gboad can access Google Calendar and you start typing "I will be busy in the future, I have …" Which will show you are in a meeting with John and make suggestions, or even add more time. Or, you can type "I'm going to be late." And "because of the traffic jam" because it knows from Google Maps that you are in a traffic jam.
Google has got information about flights and packages from your email, so it can help you track them. Why not extend these functions to Gboard? You can even get information from its search engine. Suppose you want to send a text message to someone: "I want to see a new movie." Then it will check the new movie (backstage) and suggest "… Star Wars movies". There are many other ways to take advantage of the code we have ingrained in Google's system to save us valuable time when a typical situation occurs.
Of course, if the connection is not a two-way connection, and Gboard data reaches Google's AdSense server, it will attract attention, so you can advertise based on the content of your text messages. As we discussed in the last article, this seems to happen in some way, so I personally don't mind getting some extra convenience from it.
And if you prefer to find every letter in a text message, you can turn off the word suggestion function at any time. But I kind of doubt you'll do it. Feel free to share your good and bad experience in word prediction, but don't forget to mention the keyboard you use!
