It finally happened. Microsoft provides developers with a command-line interface to install their favorite tools. Yes-- Microsoft released a preview version of the Windows package manager at today's Build 2020 launch.

It's not just about helping developers build for Windows. This is to help developers and enterprises accept Windows. Microsoft is trying to make developers fall in love with Windows, not macOS and Linux. Part of this task includes releasing tools such as Windows terminals for enterprises and improving WSL for anyone who needs Linux. The other part is to help developers (and IT administrators) set up their Windows environment as easily as possible. Similarly, Microsoft has added what is highly needed in today's PowerToys: operation and keyboard mapping. But the former is undoubtedly bigger news.

The Windows package Manager is a command line interface for searching, viewing, and installing common development tools. Developers list their applications in the GitHub repository; the package manager acquires and installs them. At a briefing before building in 2020, Scott Hansman, a project manager for Microsoft partners, explained the long-term plan:

You have just joined a company and they will give you employment documents. They will give you some ridiculous Word documents, and then they will say, 'here, on the blackboard. It's like "install this". Put it on. To be honest, they don't want you to finish any work in at least a few months. They said,'be ready by the weekend. "they're lying. You have to install all the equipment. This is a big problem.

What if you can use the Windows package manager? You can say, winget install terminal, winget install visual studio. "bang, bang. What if I could give you a script to set up your machine? you have everything you need. it's one thing. And then they said, 'well, now we have the source code." That's what they said. Take down the source code and compile. Just compile it. "it's never been like this.

What I want to do is, I want to say, I want to join your circle. I want to join your space. I want to enter your password. There is a best practice. We want a range of tools. I would say, 'give me those tools. I want to go into code space, and we will rotate a container in the cloud and get the code from GitHub. You now have an area in the cloud that represents the company's best practices. In a few minutes, you can really be coded. People do say that. In about 10 minutes, you can start running. This is something I have never seen before. I've been doing this for 30 years.

Even better, the Windows package manager is open source. Microsoft asked developers to help improve it.

Microsoft PowerToys is a free system tool designed for Windows superusers. PowerToys adds or changes features to maximize productivity or add more customized features. They were originally applied to Windows 95 and later versions of Windows XP. Last year, Microsoft re-launched PowerToys for Windows 10.

Microsoft today released version 0.18 of PowerToys. This update adds two new features: electric toy operation and keyboard mapper. The former is an application startup tool that starts the program faster (press the alt spacebar to start typing). The latter allows you to customize keyboard input keys to keys and shortcuts to shortcuts.
